This is Mr. Mark. He is one of the horses that survived Helene and the landslide that went through his property.
His owner, Stefan Bonitz, is in charge of agricultural emergency supply in the disaster zone near Chimney Rock off Hwy 9.
Thomas O’Herrin and Gabriel Witte have been restoring the private roads the best they can with the limited funds they have for two weeks in the disaster area between Black Mountain and Chimney Rock. They are both from the Asheville area and had to do something to help. The work they have completed free of charge since the storm includes:
-forging a wet bridge for travel across a washed out preexisting bridge site., clearing 4 culverts of debris and redirecting the flow of one river and 3 creeks back into the preexisting culverts, removal of thousands of lbs of land slide debris, and installation of 2 new culverts to improve weak areas of water flow.
When they arrived at Mr. Mark's place, Stefan’s trucks were trapped by landslides, and the ruts in his 1 mile-long drive were so deep they had to be filled in with fallen trees so he could ride his 4-wheeler out.
The amazing thing to them was that Stefan didn’t let his tragic situation slow him down. He rode his 4 wheeler all over the mountains to help deliver hay and feed to local animals in the community.
It was an honor and privilege to be able to help a community servant like this!
Thomas and his excavator were able to dig out the debris-packed culverts and divert the creek off the roads and restore travel up and down the road . A pickup truck can now easily travel up and down.
The need for gravel on top of the work we did is great. One hard rain could make it impassable again.
This fundraiser is to provide the labor and materials to finish the roads to Mr. Mark’s home and secure ease of travel for Stefan in his relief efforts.
All fund raised here will be used to continue the work Thomas O’Herrin and Gabriel Witte are doing to clear and restore private roads free of charge. . Gas, materials, and expenses is how the funds will be used.
