Help us save Hamilton wetlands!

Hamilton wetlands, creeks, streams, hedgerows and forests are at grave risk from looming warehouse developments in the AEGD - Airport Employment Growth District. This 1300 acre parcel, bounded by Fiddlers Green Road, Garner Road, Upper James, and the airport was rezoned from "rural" to "industrial" in 2015 to create a massive employment zone on top of farmland and wetlands.

Being the highest point between the city and Hamilton airport, the AEGD is the headwaters of dozens of Hamilton's creeks and streams. Please help us to raise awareness and fight back against the plans to cover our headwater wetlands with mammoth warehouse developments such as the the one planned to obliterate the Garner Marsh, headwaters of Ancaster Creek at 140 Garner Rd E

At the Garner Marsh, new owner AIMCo (Alberta Investment Management Corporation) and their agent Urban Solutions believe that “sliding over a wetland” to get it out of their way would be an "ecological gain". And this is just one of dozens of warehouse complexes planned for the AEGD with the same lack of consideration for natural heritage. Your donation will go toward helping us engage meaningfully with local Indigenous nations, educate Hamiltonians as to what is at stake, and hold community outreach events.

Hamiltonians need to know what is at stake if we allow unfettered development to pave 1300 acres of prime farmland, wetlands and habitat on the mountain of the City of Waterfalls.

Hamilton mountain wetlands are a sanctuary for birds, toads, reptiles, insects, and bats. Red-winged Blackbirds sing amongst the cattails, and dragonflies buzz overhead. In the winter, Tundra Swans take refuge here during their annual migration, resting before resuming their long journeys. Summer evenings bring a chorus of song from Peepers and American toads, which can be heard across the fields of the neighbouring farms. -Photo credit Richard Leitner, The Spec
