They love all kinds of food, snacks and drinks. Not to mention their Jerky! As a South African we still make our own type of Jerky called Biltong. Personally it wins hands down. But we are here to prove it. Feel free to ask for a sample of the great taste as we want to share our culture with the rest of America! Providing a satisfying yet healthy snack for your family.
Biltong is a type of dried meat that originated in Southern Africa. It was first made by the indigenous people of the region, who used it as a way to preserve meat. The word “biltong” comes from the Dutch words “bil” and “tong,” which mean “rump” and “strip” respectively.
Early Origins
Biltong was first created by the indigenous people of South Africa over 400 years ago. They preserved their meat by curing it with salt and hanging it to dry. This method allowed them to store meat for extended periods, making it a vital source of nutrition during times of scarcity.
Evolution of Biltong
Biltong as it is today evolved from the dried meat carried by the wagon-travelling Voortrekkers, who needed stocks of durable food as they migrated from the Cape Colony north and north-eastward (away from British rule) into the interior of Southern Africa during the Great Trek.
