My name is Len Dodson and I’m fundraising for my precious Sister-in-Law, Vicky Dodson. With 30 years in the Travel Service Industry and retirement still years down the road, Covid happened…and air travel all but stopped and Vicky lost her job. After 14 months of living on and depleting their savings, Vicky was finally able to secure an exciting and new position with Onyx Center Source as Sales Director. Vicky absolutely loved working with Onyx with hopes that this new career path was to take her into and preferably well past retirement age. Things were going great until… Monday, 11/28/22 Vicky went to the ER with breathing issues due to her COPD. Because of an issue with the water supply in downtown Houston, patients were sent to the Woodlands Hospital Vicky was at, filling up all the available rooms with the more critical patients. She was kept overnight in the ER and sent home the following morning on antibiotics and Prednisone. …and then, 4 short days later, the unthinkable happened… Vicky’s breathing was improving, but still she continued to get sicker and sicker. On Saturday, she collapsed at home and was transported back to the hospital via ambulance in extreme critical condition. On the short ride to the hospital, her blood pressure plummeted to 30/20. She was in septic shock, caused by a staph infection, and at death’s door. In order to save her life, she had to be given vasopressors which was given to keep blood supplied to her vital organs. One of the extremely horrific side effects of vasopressors is that they can cause the patient’s extremities to become necrotic, and within a few short days, Vicky’s hands and feet had turned black. During that first week, she had to be placed on a ventilator and her family was being told that she was extremely critical and may not survive. “Princess Warrior Granny” No truer title has been given to anyone, and her Grandson, Blake Merriman, nailed it when he called her “Princess Warrior Granny” that very first time. Our precious Vicky fought hard and did survive, and continues to fight hard every single day. She’s such an inspiration to everyone who knows her, but this battle has taken it’s toll on her frail body. She remained in ICU for weeks, then moved down to a step-down unit days before her transfer to a rehabilitation hospital on December 22, 2022. When asked, she’d state her pain levels were “20 out of 10” and to add insult to injury, she got Pneumonia and then both she and her Cowboy came down with Covid. He could no longer visit her at the hospital and she had to be moved into isolation. Finally, she was removed from isolation on January 12th, and she finally got to see her Cowboy again after almost 2 weeks. She was released on January 16th to go home and try to build up her strength for her upcoming surgeries. The surgeries… Surgery #1) Sadly, her dominant right hand could not be saved, and on February 10, 2023, the surgeon removed her entire right hand a few inches above the wrist. This is the day she now refers to as “Cubby’s Birthday “. Surgery #2) On Easter Sunday, one of the fingertips on Vicky’s left hand self-amputated, so the surgery to trim down and cover the exposed bone and to remove the 2nd fingertip was performed 3 days later. She’s so extremely thankful that she has only lost the 2 fingertips and calls her left hand “God’s hand”! Surgery #3) on April 27th, just 2 short weeks later, all the tips of the toes on her left foot and her entire big toe on her right foot had to be amputated. Normally, her surgeon wouldn’t do surgery on both feet at once, but her big toe was self-amputating and couldn’t wait any longer. For almost a month, she was totally confined to a wheelchair. Surgery #4) Right foot surgery, and praying the last - date to be determined once her feet are healed enough. They’re going to have to completely remove the 2nd toe and tips of all remaining toes like they did on her left foot. Once this is all completely healed, she’ll have to go to PT and OT to learn how to walk with her new normal feet and to gain as much use as she can with her non-dominant left hand. The need: For Vicky to allow me to reach out on her behalf at all speaks volumes about the severity of their need. Needless to say, because Vicky can’t return to work until her surgeries are completed and healed and PT/OT has shown her how she’ll be able to work again, the lack of her full-time income has really hit their limited savings hard. Billy is her full-time caregiver, so he’s not able to share in the burden of providing additional income to supplement her disability and his Social Security. Astronomical hospital and medical bills are arriving every day, prescription and bandaging material cost are through the roof, insurance has denied paying for a useable prosthetic hand and daily living expenses don’t stop just because you’re injured. The ask: Help financially if you can. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Even small amounts will help pay towards a bill, buy more gauze, buy a tank of gas, groceries, etc. Prayers are always appreciated more than words can express. We truly feel God heard and answered them back in December and why He saved her life. Her entire family and I thank you in advance for helping our beloved Vicky until she’s able to help herself once again.
