Help victims of DR Congo’s Volcanic Eruption
Last week’s volcanic eruption from Mount Nyirigongo cut a path of destruction through many districts of Goma (population 2 million) killing dozens of people and causing thousands to flee from fear. A subsequent big earthquake and hundreds of further tremors have caused officials to declare an evacuation for 2/3rds of the city. This is in addition to grave concerns that the seismic activity could destabilize the massive amounts of methane gas trapped under the city and Lake Kivu that could asphyxiate the population if released into the air. Tens of thousands are walking with few if any possessions and just their family to find refuge across the border in Rwanda or south along Lake Kivu to find a place to wait out these events.
Minova, the small town 50kms south of Goma where our Ishara House is located, has received an influx of 10,000 or so of these refugees who are in dire need of food and shelter. Without government or other NGO assistance our wonderful director Herman Chirihambali and his wife Marie Claire have been cooking and feeding around 50 of these refugees daily.
We ask you for whatever support you can give us to buy further food items and supplies so as to continue this very needed work that they are lovingly doing.
With much gratitude from myself and our Board Members of www.congothreads.org , our nonprofit that supports orphaned children and vulnerable communities in DR Congo.
