難病指定の再生不良性貧血と闘うワカコさんを支援しよう

みなさん、こんにちは。

私はニューヨーク市に住む子田稚子(こだ・わかこ)さんの友人で、西嶋明子という者です。わかこさんは2022年の5月に突然、日本では難病指定となっている再生不良性貧血という病気に罹ってしまいました。この病気は骨髄の中の造血幹細胞が減少し、赤血球・白血球・血小板など全ての種類の血球が減少するというもので、完全に治癒するには骨髄移植しかないと言われています。

わかこさんは5月2日に極度の貧血でクイーンズのエルムハースト病院のERに運ばれました。当初彼女のヘモグロビン値はたったの2で(通常は13程度で3以下になると心臓発作などで亡くなる可能性もあるほど危険な状態)、生きているのが奇跡のような状態でした。そのまますぐ病棟に移動して入院生活が始まり、5月10日にマンハッタンのベルビュー病院に移動し、多くの検査の結果やっと再生不良性貧血という診断が下りました。血液が足りなくなるので輸血と検査を繰り返し、5月19日にようやく一時退院しました。

一時退院したとはいえ、その間も通院が続き、6月14日の血液検査の結果が悪かったため1泊2日の入院で輸血もしました。

6月21日から28日までは免疫抑制療法(ATG)という治療のため再び入院してICUに滞在。モニターで全て管理されての孤独な隔離治療を受けました。6月29日からは一般病棟でステロイドと免疫抑制剤を大量に投与する治療を受けて7月9日にようやく退院しました。現在は自宅で療養中ですが未だ予後看過中であり、自宅でも高額な薬をたくさん飲まなくてはいけません。

転倒したり体をぶつけたりすると血が止まりにくいこと、免疫抑制剤を飲んでいるので感染症にかかりやすいこと、貧血が起こりやすいこと、などなどの理由で働くことも制限されています。

この病気を完治できる治療法は骨髄移植だけなので、今後も絶えず検査をしながら病気をコントロールする治療を続けなくてはいけません。これからどうなるかまだまだ先行きは不明な状態です。

わかこさんはアメリカに家族がいないので、私たち友人や知人の援助が必要です。わかこさんは心の優しい方で、これまでも入院中の子供たちやお年寄りをお見舞いするボランティアをしたり、海外在住日本人が在外投票しやすくなるような運動に参加したりと、さまざまな無償の活動をしてきました。どうかわかこさんが安心して治療に専念できるよう、とりあえずの生活費や薬代を補う寄付のサポートをお願いします。

My name is Akiko Nishijima. I am a friend of Ms. Wakako Koda, who lives in New York City. In May 2022, Wakako suddenly contracted aplastic anemia, designated an intractable disease in Japan. The disease causes a decrease in hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, reducing all types of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It is said that only a bone marrow transplant can completely cure the disease.

Wakako was rushed to the ER at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens on May 2 with extreme anemia. At first, her hemoglobin level was only 2 (the normal level is around 13; if it drops below 3, that is the hazardous level that one could die from a heart attack, etc.). It

was a miracle that she was alive. On May 10, she was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where she was finally diagnosed with aplastic anemia after many tests. After repeated blood transfusions and tests, she was finally temporarily discharged on May 19.

Although it was a temporary discharge, she needed to continue going back to the hospital during that time. Because the blood test results on June 14 were poor, she had to stay in the hospital overnight for a blood transfusion.

From June 21 to 28, she was again hospitalized and stayed in the ICU for a treatment called immunosuppressive therapy (ATG). From June 29, she was treated in the general ward with a large dose of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs and was finally discharged on July 9. She is now recovering at home, but is still under prognosis and has to take a lot of expensive medicines at home.

Due to the conditions, her jobs and daily activities are restricted. She must be very cautious not to fall or hit because she is prone to bleed, and the bleeding is difficult to stop. She is also prone to infections because of taking immunosuppressive drugs, and is prone to anemia.

The only cure for this disease is a bone marrow transplant. Wakako needs to continue to undergo constant testing and treatment to control the disease. The future of her health is still uncertain.

Since Wakako has no family in the U.S., she needs the support of her friends and acquaintances. Wakako is a kind-hearted person who has always worked for others without compensation. Her activities include volunteering at hospitals to visit sick children and the elderly, and being involved in advocacy to improve Japan’s overseas election system so that Japanese citizens living abroad can better participate in elections. Please help support Wakako with donations to supplement her living expenses and medical costs for the time being so that she can focus on her medical treatment with peace of mind.
