Help Walter Get New Wheels

Our dear friends, Jennifer and Walter Bonam, are two of the most loving people in the world. Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of times bad things happen to good people. They are no exception. In 2011, Walter, a strapping 6‘4” gentle giant, was cut down by a robber’s bullet and rendered a quadriplegic, forced to use a motorized wheelchair for mobility. His incredibly sharp mind and even sharper wit were fortunately untouched, and neither was the Bonams’ undaunting spirit.

Over these years, the Bonams have never asked for assistance, and we can only recall some early fundraisers in 2011 that were done at Corpus Christi - Epiphany Church, where Jennifer continues to serve as the Director of Music Ministries. Always servant leaders and always willing to help others, Walter, too, served many years on the staff at the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Now it’s our turn to help. A couple of weeks ago, the Bonams were involved in a very scary traffic accident that totaled Walter’s van and smashed his motorized wheelchair, making it completely inoperable as well. That chair and that vehicle were his only means of leaving the house and experiencing the world around him. Unfortunately, they had invested heavily into their accessibility-outfitted van and now are at the mercy of the insurance company to see if they can obtain any money to help with the purchase of another vehicle. However, the cost to replace a similar vehicle is in excess of $80,000.

Here’s our chance to step up. It is our hope that together with people that know them and people that know us, we can create a Christmas “miracle” by raising $50,000 to help the Bonams purchase a new vehicle (with whatever the insurance company provides) and make the necessary repairs to his motorized wheelchair. Let’s help Walter secure some “new wheels” and secure the freedom to leave his own home. No gift is too small, nor is any gift too great, because if you know them, you love them, and you know that they deserve this kind of support.
