Help With Baby Owen Campbell’s Medical Journey

Donation protected
At 32 weeks gestation, during a routine ultrasound Jen and Dan Campbell learned that their son had a diaphragmatic hernia and would need surgery once he was born. Jen’s water broke at 33 weeks in the middle of the night.

On October 12, 2020 Owen Jepson Campbell was born via emergency caesarean section at only 33 weeks weighing 4 lbs 14 oz. Owen was immediately transported to Children’s Hospital in Boston where they repaired his diaphragmatic hernia and was put on a respirator.

At just ten days old, Owen was retaining water and his oxygen levels were dropping so he needed a chest tube put in. At this time, Owen also had a feeding tube put in. On November 13, Owen finally came off of the ventilator and was given oxygen through his nose. Working hard to get stronger each day, Owen was doing well in the NICU. On November 25, Owen went into cardiac arrest while his Mama was holding him at the hospital. The doctors jumped into action to help Owen and he was put back on a respirator.

Since then, Owen has had multiple surgeries and procedures including surgery on his main artery, surgery on his esophagus, and the build up of fluid drained multiple times throughout his body.

On January 19, 2021 Owen graduated from the MSICU and was placed in a general room at Boston Children’s Hospital. Finally, on February 8, 2021 Owen was cleared to go home with his parents, after 119 days at Boston Children’s Hospital!

After being home for just two months, Owen needed a procedure done on his head to drain fluid. After this procedure, Owen ended up back in the ICU with a high fever. After many tests including a spinal tap, doctors found that Owen has bacterial meningitis.

Today, April 25, 2021 Owen is 195 days old and continues to  reside at Boston Children’s hospital. The average cost for infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) is around $3,000 per day.

During this time, Owen’s parents Jen and Dan Campbell have been trying to balance their jobs, Jen working in the Hollis Brookline school district and Dan a Sergeant for the Milford Police Department, as well as taking care of Owen’s big sister Marla. Jen and Dan are the most devoted parents, spending as much time as possible with their son in Boston. In the 195 days that Owen has been on this Earth, the Campbells have spent most of those nights at hotels in Boston where they would get some rest at night and be as close as possible to spend the days with Owen through his procedures, surgeries, and all that he has had to take on.

Jen and Dan are not ones to ask for help, but between the costs of medical bills, the hotel stays to be close to the hospital, gas, and so much more, I am asking for them. The Campbell’s are the type of people that would help out anyone, and right now, they need our help. Please, if you are willing or able, consider donating for Owen and his family. This family has enough stress worrying about Owen’s health, let’s take some of the financial stress off. Let’s come together as a community and help out this young family.
