Bri’s Journey
Final medical expenses for Sheryl Knight
Sheryl Knight, known for many years in the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) as Baroness Briana Etain MacKorkhill–Bri to those of us who loved her and love her still–passed away Saturday, March 23, after a series of health events, resulting in extended hospital stays. In her immediate household–her husband Ron (Modar) and lifelong companion Joan (Jadwiga)–are also dealing with their own health concerns and their own medical bills. Even with insurance, these expenses are adding up to a crushing sum. We would like to ease the financial burden for them and ask for your generous assistance.
She had been having some off-and-on difficulties with her health for some time, including some leg wounds that did not want to heal. On February 2, a visit with her regular provider gave cause for concern relating to some lingering wounds, and she was admitted to the hospital. There, an infection was managed; and ultimately, a toe was amputated. This required a two-week stay until she had recovered enough to return home.
Things were looking up for about a week, then she had another incident occur. She returned to the hospital for a one-week stay in the ICU before she stabilized again and was able to return home, this time with portable oxygen to support her rest and recovery. Again, she seemed to be improving.
On March 17, Sheryl collapsed as the family was leaving the home. Ron (formerly an EMT) performed CPR until EMS arrived and was able to restart her heart, but despite swift and expert action, she would never regain consciousness. After several rounds of diagnostic testing in the ICU, including two MRIs one day apart for comparison, it was determined on Thursday that nothing more medically could be done. The decision to remove life support was made according to her prior stated wishes. She left us peacefully the evening of March 23.
Bri was a deeply caring person, full of life and love and mischief. While she was always a little sad to have never brought a child into the world, she did adopt many misfits and orphans whose parents couldn’t or wouldn’t be there for them. We would like to honor her by caring for those she leaves behind. Any assistance you can offer will go directly to covering her final medical expenses.
In heartbroken gratitude,
All of her misfit kids
