In March of 2014, Shannon Grant Ward was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer. What exactly is Carcinoid Cancer? They family didn’t know either. It is a rare cancer that usually goes undiagnosed until it progresses far enough to cause symptoms.
Shannon along with her husband and daughter had contracted the flu that year and while her husband Pete and daughter Morgan recovered and got better...Shannon got worse. Unable to breathe, she was taken to the ER. There they did an X-ray and determined her lung had collapsed along with discovering a spot in her lung that was concerning. They scheduled surgery to remove her lower lung lobe that contained the mass. Shannon was extremely happy and hopeful that she was free from the cancer....until they performed an entire body scan and detected several tumors throughout her organs. But still, Shannon was determined to fight this Stage 4 cancer diagnosis. She had too much to live for! You see, Shannon was the glue that held her family together. After losing her own mother when she was just 19, she knew how precious life was and that she must be the best “insert title” she could be. She took every opportunity to be a light in the dark. She has always been the best sister to her siblings, daughter to her father and step mom, the best wife to her husband and her greatest joy was becoming a mother to her daughter...it was not long before she became a sister in law and world's greatest aunt to all of her nephews and nieces. While fighting her battle, she became brighter and brighter...often so bright the light she shone reflected off each person she engaged with because her faith and relationship with God was ignited and on fire. During her battle, she gained a son in law and her 2nd greatest joy....her granddaughter. Shannon had even more to fight for and taking the advice from her loving father who said “don’t waste a day”, she didn’t! She lived each day praising God and loving her family...soaking up every moment she could from sun up till sun down.
Due to her cancer being rare, many of her treatments and medications have been considered “trial” and have not been covered by her insurance. Additionally, the treatment centers for her specific cancer have not been near by. She has been forced to seek out care in multiple locations that specialized and treated her rare cancer - from New Orleans to Tennessee. The last 4 months have been her hardest and she has been in the hospital more days than she has been out. The doctors have tried everything they can, but unfortunately her cancer has become too aggressive.
Shannon has been moved to Hospice care and the family has been told to prepare themselves for what is to come. Shannon is in her final days on earth but we all know her Kingdom awaits her. We ask that if you feel it upon your heart, you would give what you can to help the family put Shannon to rest and ease some of the burdens they are currently dealing with.
From the bottom of their hearts, the family thanks you.
