Help with recovery after spinal cord injury
Donation protected
Hi, many of you will know us and our story already, it can be found here - https://gofund.me/9d350910
Alan is my 16 year old son who suffered a spinal cord injury in December 2023 as a result of a freak incident at home.
We are now trying to raise more funds, urgently, to allow Alan to take part in alternative combined therapies to try and improve his condition and quality of life.
Alan is only 16 and has a whole life ahead of him. He came so far in his journey and is ever so positive and determined. Currently sitting GCSEs, Alan already had to drop his dream of joining the RAF and becoming a pilot, he has contacted the RAF himself and was told that unfortunately, this is a NO due to his recent disability. This really hit him hard.
We have searched long and wide for any other possible therapies to try and help Alan get the best outcome possible and we have found a place that offers stem cell therapy combined with the epidural stimulation. Both procedures are done under the general anesthesia during the spinal surgery, both aims to improve his muscle tone, voluntary movement, regaining sensation in the lower parts of his body, improved bladder and bowel functions and finally to allow Alan to stand unaided or to make few steps. Following the procedure Alan will undergo an intensive 30-day rehabilitation at the clinic that involves 4-5 hours of therapy daily, including the epidural stimulator mapping sessions.
It all sounds crazy and scary but if we will not give it a try we will regret it for the rest of our lives.
The problem we face, as you can imagine, is the cost.
The surgery, stem cells, therapy and hospital stay is 122,000.00 USD which comes to around £100,00.00 this is not to include flights, visas and my stay as Alan’s carer.
So far, since January, we have raised near enough £30,000 which allowed Alan to take part in an intensive Neuro rehabilitation after the accident, to buy all the physio equipment for home use so we can continue his daily rehab at home and finally to buy his wheelchair.
As it’s stands at present, we have:
** £15,000 left from the previous fundraising,
** secured £40,000 loan,
** and we are thinking of selling our car to get another £10,000 (this is not an ideal option as we need our car to transport Alan and for his dad to commute to work outside of Ripon).
All this effort leaves us still nowhere near the full amount needed.
Further £35,000 is needed at least so we can secure the date for Alan’s surgery which is initially agreed for the 9th July 2024. However, to secure this date, we have to pay the whole amount by 10th of June
It feels so unreal and so depressing, knowing that our son could potentially get a bit better but we have no funds to give him this chance
So here we are again, begging you for your help.
We are forever grateful for all the donations received so far, kind messages, shares. Please, if you can, help us again
