Help With Storm Recovery & Preparations

Project Row Houses would love to have your help as we recover from the winter storm in February and prepare our residents and their homes for the storm season ahead.

We will use these funds to complete repairs on our site and to assemble emergency supply kits for our residents so we know they'll have the basics on hand when the next storm comes.

Project Row Houses , Row House CDC, and PRH - Preservation work closely to provide safe, affordable housing to just over 80 families. On top of that, PRH has our offices, row houses, education and programming buildings, and the Eldorado Ballroom.

The impact of Winter Storm Uri was immediate and frightening.

Our residents, like almost everyone else in Texas, were without water and electricity while the temperatures stayed below freezing.

As soon as it was safe for staff to travel to the site, we did all we could to help with the immediate need for food and shelter. The community sprung into action:

- Our friends at Niantic spent hours working long-distance from California, tracking down supplies and coordinating deliveries when we didn't have time to be on the phone. Just as important as their help was knowing "on the outside" understood what we were going through.

- Restaurants that had already taken big hits from the pandemic closures, staffed by people who were also dealing with water and power issues, gave us amazing discounts on hot food for our residents. Houston Sauce Kitchen, Soul Food Vegan, Off the Leash Hot Dogs, Etta's Kitchen, Pit Boss BBQ, and the team at Lucille's - next time you're hungry, show them some love!

Though we prepared the site in advance, wrapping pipes and turning off water, we had damage in almost every building. Some of the homes and all of the rest of the buildings are over 50 years old. Old infrastructure can only take so much stress.

The only buildings that didn't have plumbing damage were our Art Houses.

Largely because the Art Houses don't have plumbing.

PRH does have insurance - we wouldn't operate without it - but while that has covered some of the major repair costs, it hasn't come close to replacing everything we spent and everything we lost.

And now, we're counting down the days until what experts are saying is going to be an active hurricane season.

Your donation will help us not only get everything back to pre-storm condition, but will also allow us to assemble emergency kits for all of our residences.

We'll be buying all those things the experts recommend you stock up on ahead of a storm, like hand-powered phone chargers and flashlights, water storage bags and bottles, and more.

We'll still be there the minute the storm has passed, but we don't want to risk anyone being without the basics if things get as bad as they did in Uri or Harvey.

Here's how you can help.

First, please make sure YOU are prepared for storm season.

Then, if you can, make a donation. Gifts of all sizes will get us to our goal.

If you can't donate right now, don't worry. You can still help by sharing this on social media and encouraging others to give!

Thanks so much for reading to the end. We're grateful to count you as part of the Project Row Houses family.
