Help Xena Afford Her New Knee!

Donation protected
Over the last year, our sweet dog Xena began developing issues with her left hind leg. Over time, it transformed from "just being sore" after playing to a full on limp impacting her ability to move around normally.

In September, we took Xena to our vet to understand what we could do to help her. Immediately recognizing her lameness, our vet let us know that it was highly likely she would need TPLO surgery (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) to regain normal motion in her leg again. Basically what this meant was: she tore her cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), a ligament similar to the ACL in humans. When the CCL is torn or injured, the shin bone (tibia) slides forward with respect to the thigh bone (femur). Most dogs with this injury cannot walk normally and experience pain. The resulting instability damages the cartilage and surrounding bones and leads to osteoarthritis (OA).

In October, we were able to get in to see the recommended surgeon who also confirmed Xena would need TPLO surgery, and let us know it would cost between $5000-$5600 for the surgery alone.

In mid November, we dropped Xena off with teary eyes for her overnight stay where they performed the TPLO surgery and found a torn ligament and arthritis beginning to form.

Now, Xena is home recovering (recovery is very intense and slow moving - 9 to 12 weeks of very limited mobility). She is doing well but very eager to play with her younger sister and run around the yard again.

At this point, we have veterinary bills for Xena of over $6000 that have put us in a financially strained position. These bills include: several vet appointments, anti inflammatory meds, xrays, surgeon consultation fees, and the TPLO surgery. We will continue to have bills for follow-up xrays, appointments, pain management, rehabilitation, etc.

While we don't anticipate or expect to have Xena's knee cost fully covered by others, we genuinely feel we need some support to get our finances in a more stable position after several other unrelated high expenses have also hit at the same time. When we found out Xena would need this surgery, we knew it would be hard to manage financially, but we also didn't think twice about giving her what she needed. Every dog deserves to be comfortable, happy, and healthy, and we committed to doing anything to make sure this is the case for her, even if it means financial stress for us in the short term.

If you have anything to spare, it would mean so so so much to Riley and myself. We appreciate any and all support in any form we can get. Thank you!
