Help Yorktown Assembly Rebuild After Fire
Tax deductible
At 12:45am Sunday morning our neighbor & congregant, Kim Lewis' German Shepherd, Bear, barked to get Kim's attention. When Kim looked out the window to see why Bear was barking she saw the church in flames. Right away Kim called 911 and then woke our staff members, Matt & Lisa, to alert them and get them out of possible harms way living right next door to the church.
We know God was there tonight protecting our building. The fire started on the exterior of the building and was just starting to spread through the attic above the sanctuary before the firefighters were able to put out the flames. The fire was electrical and started from the lighting on the exterior cross. There is extensive damage to the roof and exterior wall of the building, as well as water damage in the sanctuary and to our instruments, but we are so thankful as it could have been so much worse.
The fire chief said, “...go out and buy a lottery ticket because it’s incredible that this is how minor the damage is... 5-10 more minutes without the 911 call and the entire building would have been engulfed...”
We know that it was not luck, it was God's protection over His church and people.
We want to thank the NY State Police, Somers Fire Department, Yorktown Fire Department, Mahopac Fire Department, Mahopac Falls Fire Department, Croton Falls Fire Department, Katonah Fire Department, & Mohegan Fire Department for their quick action to save our building and even tarp the roof for us. You all are true heroes and we appreciate you.
We appreciate any help we're given with the mounting costs from this fire. Insurance will cover most of the damage but there is a deductible we will have to pay. Additionally, we will likely not see the insurance money for some time. The church's finances have been very tight due to our lower numbers during Covid-19 and now to not have an offering come in this past Sunday, we are already in a very tough situation, so please think about giving to help us during this financial strain.
