Help Yüsra Start her Master’s in Germany!

Hello, This is Yüsra from Istanbul.

I am the elder child in a family whose sole income is the retirement pension of my father, earned by years of labor. I graduated first in my class from Istanbul University, the best department of Theatre Studies in Turkey, with a major in Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy as a high honor student. Throughout my undergraduate years, I have been dreaming of continuing my studies by doing a master's abroad. Since my graduation last year, I have been making an intense effort to realize this dream.

I applied to KU Leuven, Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam, and other prestigious schools in Europe, and I was accepted to all of the programs I applied to including the one I wanted to attend the most: Freie Universität Berlin's Master's program in “Interdisciplinary Studies of the Middle East”. I am very happy to have been able to complete the difficult and costly application process successfully. However, even though I managed to put aside some of the 11208 euros required for the visa by working, I could not come up with the financial means to cover the entire amount.

Education in Germany is free and Berlin in particular is a city that offers many options for economically disadvantaged students. However, if you are not an EU citizen, you need a national visa to start your studies. This is where the financial difficulties for non-EU students begin. The German government asks for a 'blocked account' (Sperrkonto) as a prerequisite for the national visa. Sperrkonto requires that a predetermined amount of money be deposited into a blocked account, which is later made available to the student in monthly installments to cover the basic needs for a year. The fee set by the German authorities this year is 934 euros per month, totaling 11208 euros.

Since last December, I have been working at a job where I get a monthly salary of 20.000 TL (550 Euros), a little above the minimum wage in Turkey. I’ve come up with 150.000 TL (I live with my family) by saving almost all of the payments. Add the amount remaining from what I put aside for applications last year, my savings amount to 4500 euros in total. With some support from my family members and a one time scholarship from a Turkey based company, I was able to come up with the most of the required amount, However, the terrible rise in the exchange rate and the fact that I come from a working-class family mean that I cannot afford to pay all of the required amount for the Sperrkonto. So, I still need around 2500 euros for the blocked account.

I would also like to inform you about what I will do if I don't reach the required amount by the deadline of this crowdfunding campaign:

1-) If I can’t reach the required amount by the deadline but collect more than half of it, I plan to take out a loan and pay it off later, however, loans in Turkey have very high interest rates and you cannot postpone the payback, which comes with the risk of not being able to enter Turkey for a few years in case of missed installments. Of course, the assumption is that the bank will lend me the amount I need.

2-) If we cannot raise the required amount or complete the remaining part, I will use the amount accumulated through this campaign to fulfill the blocked account requirement for my master's degree application for the summer semester of 2025 (the semester starting in April 2025).

İşçi emeklisi bir baba ve ev hanımı bir annenin iki çocuğundan büyüğüyüm. Tiyatro Çalışmaları bölümünün Türkiye'deki en iyisi olan İstanbul Üniversitesi Tiyatro Eleştirmenliği ve Dramaturji bölümünü tamamlayarak bölüm birinciliği ile mezun oldum. Lisans yıllarımdan beri, akademik gelişimimi yurtdışında yüksek lisans yaparak sürdürmenin hayalini kuruyor, geçen seneki mezuniyetimden bu yana da hayalimi gerçekleştirmek için yoğun bir çaba gösteriyorum.

Avrupa'da başvurduğum KU Leuven, Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam gibi değerli okulların yanında, girmeyi en çok istediğim üniversite olan Freie Universitat Berlin'in "Interdisciplinary Studies of the Middle East" başlıklı yüksek lisans bölümünden kabul aldım. Zorlu ve maliyetli başvuru süreçlerinin altından kalkabildiğim için mutluyum. Fakat vize için gerekli olan 11208 Euro'nun, bir kısmını çalışarak biriktirmeyi başarsam da, tamamını karşılayabileceğim bir maddi güce erişimim yok.

Bu noktada sizlere biraz vize sürecinden bahsetmek ve bahsi geçen maddi tabloyu detaylandırmak istiyorum. Almanya'da eğitim ücretsiz ve özellikle Berlin ekonomik açıdan dezavantajlı öğrenciler için pek çok opsiyon sağlayan bir şehir. Fakat AB vatandaşı değilseniz eğitime başlamak için ulusal vize almanız gerekiyor. AB vatandaşı olmayan öğrenciler için işin maddi zorluğu tam da bu noktada başlıyor. Alman devleti, ulusal vize vermek için bir ‘bloke hesap’ koşulu belirlemiş. Bu koşul; öğrencinin bir yıl boyunca temel ihtiyaçlarını karşılayabileceği belirli bir miktarın, her ay için ayrılan kısmın o ay geldiğinde öğrencinin erişimine açılacağı bir bloke hesaba yatırılmasını zorunlu kılıyor. Bu ücret, Alman makamları tarafından aylık 934 euro olmak üzere toplamda 11208 euro olarak belirlenmiş.

Aralık ayından bu yana asgari ücretin biraz üstü, 20.000 TL maaş aldığım bir yerde çalışıyorum. Buradan gelen paranın neredeyse hepsini kenara koyarak 150.000 TL biriktirdim (ailemle yaşıyorum). Geçen yıl okul devam ederken, başvurular için kenara koyduğum parayla birlikte bu birikim toplam 4500 euro etti. Uzak-yakın aile üyelerimin ve arkadaşlarımın desteğiyle bloke hesap için gerekli paranın önemli bir kısmını topladım. Döviz kurunun korkunç tırmanışı ve alt sınıftan bir aileden geldiğim gerçeği, kötü bir araba parası bile etmeyecek bu maddi koşulları sağlayamayışımla sonuçlanıyor. Dolayısıyla bloke hesap için hala 2500 euroya ihtiyacım var.

Bu bağış kampanyasının sona ereceği tarihe kadar gereken miktara ulaşamazsam yapacağım şeyler hakkında da sizi bilgilendirmek isterim:

1-) Eğer son tarihe kadar gereken miktara ulaşamazsam ama bağışın yarısından fazlasını toplarsam kredi çekerek üstünü tamamlamayı planlıyorum. Fakat Türkiye'de krediler oldukça yüksek faizli ve hemen ödemeye başlayamayacağım açık. Ödeme yapmazsam Türkiye'ye birkaç yıl girememe gibi bir risk söz konusu. Tabii bu durum, bankanın bana istediğim miktarda kredi vereceği varsayımını kapsıyor.

2-) Eğer gerekli miktarı toplayamaz ve kalan kısmı da tamamlayamazsam, bu kampanyayla biriken miktarı 2025 yaz dönemi için (2025 Nisan’da başlayacak dönem) yapacağım yüksek lisans başvurusunun bloke hesap koşulunu sağlamak üzere kullanacağım.

Okula kabul belgelerini ya da herhangi başka bir ayrıntıyı merak edenleriniz bana ulaşabilirler; belgeleri yollayabilirim, sorularınızı cevaplayabilirim. Bunun yanında, bu mecraya Türkiye'den bağış yapmak isteyip de yapamayanlar varsa lütfen haberleşelim.

Memlekette genel olarak çoğunluğumuzun maddi durumunun iyi olmadığının bilincindeyim. Dolayısıyla birçoğunuzun büyük bağışlar yapma lüksünün olmadığını biliyorum. Ancak dayanışmaya inanıyorum. Katkıda bulunacağınız 1 Euro'nun bile benim hayatımı değiştireceğini, beni hayallerime yaklaştıracağını bilmenizi istiyorum.
