Help Yusuf fix his door after police aggression

Thank you so much for your donations so far. We reached the initial goal to buy the cheapest front door. We have now raised the goal to the amount that would allow Yusuf and his family to replace the door with the same model as the original door.

The person:

My good friend Dr. Yusuf Daniju is neuroscientist and rising star from Brixton, South London. He is well known around the neighbourhood as an excellent tutor for local kids. In 2012, we met in a Brixton sports club, where he is a role model to many of the members. Earlier this year, he was awarded a PhD for his groundbreaking research on the effects of cannabis on the brain.

What happened:

On Thursday February 11th, 2021, on a freezing cold day, six police officers were looking for another young Black teenager regarding a documentation issue.  They broke down the door to Yusuf’s apartment, where he lives with his sister. Apparently mistaking Yusuf for the teenager, they assaulted Yusuf, kneed him, took his phone from him to stop recording, and handcuffed him. Yusuf managed to record a 1 second video before his phone was taken, in which you can hear him shout “why are you kicking me?”.

The police officers eventually let Yusuf go, but are refusing to replace the door. Yusuf now has to sleep with no front door to his apartment, in freezing February temperatures. He is also unable to leave the apartment (due to the lack of a working door) until it is fixed. The police show no remorse for this completely unjustified attack on a young Black man and role model in the community.

What he needs:

We ask you to help Yusuf pay to replace the door the police broke down.

£1,400 ($1,940) – to replace the front door with a lower quality door.

£3,000 ($4,150) to replace the front door with the same model as the original door.

This would allow Yusuf and his sister to once again sleep in safe and warm conditions, and remove the severe financial strain caused by this unwarranted attack by the police.

When does he need it:

The door needs to be replaced as soon as possible. It is cold and unsafe for Yusuf and his sister to sleep without a front door.
