Zachary Hollingsworth with Medical Expenses
Donation protected
Zachary Hollingsworth is a 20 year old that has always enjoyed life and being out visiting friends and family when he wasn’t working. He graduated from Bryant High School in 2017. And enjoys his job working at the Exploreum. He also loves music and attends every concert that he can.
Zachary was in a tragic vehicle accident on March 30, 2019. As he was driving home from his job in downtown Mobile at the Exploreum, his driver side rear tire blew out on I-10 just before exit 17 in the Mobile Alabama area. This happened as he was driving highway speed and it almost instantly caused his Ford Explorer to go into a roll. As his truck rolled four to five times, he was ejected from the passenger side window. Miraculously, the rolling came to a stop on its side just before it would’ve rolled over him, almost guaranteed to be fatal.
As he was ejected from the vehicle, he incurred quite a few severe injuries. He has a fractured sternum. 80% of his back has severe road rash with glass imbedded in it. A laceration on his left hip, also imbedded with glass. And worst of all he has a broken back with his T3, T4, and T5 vertebrae’s blown out. With his broken back, he also incurred a severe Spinal Cord Injury. Also known medically aa a Complete Spinal Cord Injury. Meaning he has no sensation or movement below his injury level, which is in his thoracic spine area at the chest area. He had surgery to fuse his spine back together from T2-T7, to stabilize his back so not to cause further damage to the spinal cord.
Zachary spent his first week in the ICU and another week outside of the ICU in a room. Drs say this is a permanent injury and chances for him to regain feeling or use of anything below the injury is very highly unlikely. But zachary is determined to get better and moving on his own again. As the Lord spared his life, he shall also heal this child. The power of prayer and the determination not to give up is what it takes to overcome tragic situations.
He was transferred to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta on April 12. He has had complications with running a fever since he arrived. So rather than him starting his rehabilitation as planned. He has been placed back into the ICU at the Center so they can attempt to figure out what or where the infection is that he is still fighting. He is a strong kid and has had a great attitude about the situation, considering what he has been through.
He and his family chose The Shepherd Center due to the high percentage of success they have. They’re ranked in the top ten centers in the nation. And they are a designated Spinal Cord Injuries rehabilitation center.
As we all know, having his family so far away from his rehabilitation center is very difficult. Travel costs can quickly add up. Traveling, food, rooms for family members, etc. This along with the out of pocket costs from the medical bills and prescriptions. Not to mention the cost of the equipment and possibly remodeling to accommodate his new lifestyle once he returns home. His parents will have to miss work as it’s required for them to stay with him for weeks at the center to learn how to properly care for him. Even if some functions do return, he will have years of rehabilitation and will return home in a wheelchair. And most homes aren’t adequately equipped to handle this.
Fortunately he does have medical insurance and most of the hospital bills are covered. But his insurance only covers so many days of rehabilitation for inpatient, then only so many days of outpatient rehabilitation per year. And he will have surpassed these numbers well before he has completed his programs.
With the costs quickly adding up for him and his family, they could use any donations that you’re willing to offer. All monies will be spent directly to Zachary and his family to bring comfort and a peace of mind from a horrible situation.
Thank you to everyone that took the time to read about this young man.
And I’ll leave you with his plea to you:
“Please buckle up, you never know when something tragic like this’ll happen and I promise it’s better to be prepared even if it doesn’t” -Zachary Hollingsworth
Again, thanks for all donations to this caring, loving family. GBY
