Help Zak and his family get through this!

On the evening of June 27th, Zak was taken to Gundersen in LaCrosse for an emergency surgery to remove infected tissue from his buttock. On the 28th and 29th, the team at Gundersen delivered some powerful IV antibiotics as well as managed his diabetic ketoacidosis (a severe diabetic complication.) On the evening of June 30th, Zak went back into surgery and they found the infection had spread further than before. The infection is called necrotizing fasciitis: a very serious, flesh-eating disease. This was likely caused from a simple cut, scrape, or ingrown hair, and was complicated by his diabetes. Zak had his third surgery this afternoon where there was further, yet scattered, spread of infection. The surgical team will continue to take him to surgery each day until they find no further spread. This could mean several more days of surgeries. His doctors are optimistic that things are headed in the right direction. They have his diabetes under control at this time with an insulin drip. The heavy-hitting IV antibiotics they have been using will continue for the foreseeable future. We are hopeful that Zak can safely return home, with lots of support, possibly sometime next week.
This guy has faced various trials and tribulations throughout his lifetime and has succeeded in tackling each and every one of them. Thanks to each and every one of you for your thoughts during this time.
In these already trying times this unfortunate situation is putting additional stress and burden on Zak and his family. If you are able, please donate or share to help ease the financial burdens they will be facing with an extended hospital stay and any other unforeseen costs that arise from this.
Thank you!
