Zaria is a young woman who has overcome unimaginable obstacles and continues to fight against the odds every day. As those who have had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her, we have witnessed firsthand her determination to not just survive, but to thrive. Zaria’s story is one of perseverance in the face of adversity. From her earliest years, she faced the harsh realities of addiction and loss. Her mother battled drug and alcohol addiction, her baby brother passed away, and her father overdosed shortly after. As her mother cycled through incarceration and treatment (and continues to), Zaria entered foster care, was separated from her other living brother, and ultimately found a home with her elderly grandmother.

By the age of nine, Zaria was already shouldering the weight of the world. She became the primary caregiver for her newborn brother, who was born with Down Syndrome. As her grandmother’s health worsened, Zaria took on the overwhelming responsibility of managing their household—balancing schoolwork, doctor appointments, and caring for her brother. When her brother’s growing needs exceeded what the home could provide, the heart-wrenching decision was made to place him in foster care, a decision that left Zaria devastated. Though she knew it was best for her brother, she felt as though she had failed him.

Now 17, Zaria has spent nearly her entire childhood carrying burdens no child should have to bear. While her peers focused on school, friendships, and preparing for their futures, Zaria was holding her family together in the face of constant crisis. When the immediate demands of caregiving subsided, she was left with a profound sense of loss and struggled with depression, unsure of who she was without the overwhelming responsibility she had carried for so long.

And yet, Zaria’s story is not one of defeat—it is one of hope, transformation, and strength. Despite every challenge, she has maintained an unwavering commitment to building a better future for herself, breaking the cycle of addiction and instability that has defined her life for too long.

Zaria dreams of attending college, building a life filled with stability and success, far from the hardships that have shaped her past. But to make that dream a reality, she needs financial support to cover the costs of senior year expenses (prom, pictures, cap and gown), college applications, a car to get to work, tuition, books, and living expenses.
