Help LIJ's SICU Fight The Pandemic of COVID-19

Hello Friends & Family,

Here at Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s Surgical ICU, we are coming together to ask for your assistance. Due to the current crisis & pandemic that is COVID-19, it has been increasingly evident that our staff and most importantly, our patients need our help.

Many celebrations, gatherings, appointments, and life events have had to be placed on hold/rescheduled or even cancelled for the safety of the lives of people around us. With that being said, a large celebration for several coworkers that was supposed to take place in the following week, had to be cancelled. These coworkers of which we were about to celebrate were getting ready to pursue their dreams of new jobs by obtaining higher degrees in CRNA & NP School. Our plans took a huge turn when our world entered a crisis. But when life takes a turn, we must learn to take the turn with it. As a unit & team, we found that this money no longer being used for the celebration could be most beneficially used towards the uproar that has been brought into a multitude of people's lives due to this pandemic. Collectively, when talking as a team, we have found that more and more family & friends have been asking how they can help! We thought setting up this GoFundMe would be the perfect way to receive all of your eager support.

The acuity of COVID-19 seen in our ICU is high. The degree of illness brought upon these patients in the ICU at many times has shown to be futile. While we think this is the worst part, it’s not. Due to the rapid spread & highly contagious nature of the virus, visitors are no longer permitted to see their loved ones. We, as nurses & healthcare professionals, are watching parents, brothers, sisters, daughters, and loved ones lose their lives, with no family at their bedside. We stand there at the bedside to hold their hand, play their favorite songs, and pray for them not only as their healthcare workers, but essentially as their family. We are their advocators, their protectors, and their support system. With acute crises, there is no planning. It just happens. So imagine the nature of which our hospital is trying to run. With your support, we can better assist families, healthcare workers, and lives that have been affected by this virus.

Some ideas we have gathered to do with the money we have raised and plan to raise are:

-A Memorial Garden to honor the lives lost on our unit.

-Along with this, we would love to team up with ISeeU Blankets, which are handmade blankets started by a wonderful nurse in SICU, that are hand delivered to patients & families on our unit. They are meant to bring a sense of comfort, in the fact that we are there and we see what they are going through in these hardships that life has brought their way. A possible incorporation of their EKG strips and fingerprint upon passing as well. (follow on insta @iseeublankets)*

-Hospitals do not only run because of nurses & doctors. We are way bigger than that. We could not do what we do, if our environmental service workers did not put themselves in harms way in order to rid our hospital of the virus and keep our hospital safe. They work HARD, and now even harder day in & day out. They need to be recognized.

-Lastly, nurses are losing fuel. We have received an outpouring of support from local restaurants, family & friends and we are SO grateful. Day after day, nurses are working more overtime with NO breaks and barely a second to chug water. We are working harder than ever before. To have coffee and grabable snacks accessible in our break room, we could prevent further burnout and anticipate that nurses and healthcare workers will not go hungry or dehydrated.

* We are always open to more ideas from our coworkers, colleagues, friends and families!

We thank you for your continuing, undying support and admiration. It never goes unnoticed. Thank you for even taking the time to read and support our cause.

With Love Always,
