Help Bring Avi Home!

So often in life we let chances pass us by. We’re always too busy, or feel we can’t really make a big enough impact, so we let something slip through our fingers. Every now and then though, we hold onto a dream so tightly that for years it burns bright in our hearts and it’s the one thing, that when everything around us is crumbling, it’s the one thing that keeps us going, keeps us refusing to give up.
I’ve known Avi Quijada for eight years, and for all of that time, we’ve been each others champion, each others touchstone. She’s my best friend in the world and yet for so much of our lives, we’ve lived in different parts of the world. You see, Avi was born in Venezuela. In Venezuela, there is no access to contraception, barely access to daily necessities, and no access to free speech and the pursuit of life and liberty. In Venezuela, Avi’s ambitions are too big. For eight years I’ve watched her scratch and claw her way for everything she’s gotten, and with each passing year, the situation in her country worsens. I’m privileged enough to have been born in a country where anything is possible, a country in which I have a voice. To watch her chase her dreams from the back of the line, to watch her pour her heart and soul into everything she does to benefit her family, is both heartbreaking and awe inspiring.
Avi has worked hard to get the recognition required to finally be able to make a life for herself living and working in the U.S. It’s been a long, arduous process, and the final step is some money for an exorbitantly high airline ticket and moving expenses because her country has now put a restriction on the number of U.S. dollars she can purchase and how much money she can spend outside of her country.
I’ve started this GoFundMe because $5750 is the last step in getting her home to the U.S. and allowing her the opportunity to flourish here while sending assistance back to her family in Venezuela. I believe Avi’s story is a lesson in not giving up, and so I’m asking all of you who can to help, even if it’s just a little, because no one gets there alone.
