Help Candy Walk Again

Donation protected
Last Saturday we were made aware of a very severe medical case. Candy is thought to have been hit by a car. She has sustained major injuries.  She has a broken femur and tibia in her left leg and a broken femur and severe infection in her right leg. Poor Candy is an emaciated puppy, about 6 months old. She looks to be a Red Bone Coonhound mix.

Occasionally when a severe case is seen, we worry first about the dog and then figure out a game plan!  Well this is one of those times - we had to move quickly to help save this precious girl's life so we concentrated on getting her to our vet first and now we have to figure out how to pay for the extensive care she needs.

This is the note from the initial consulting vet-
Country Hills Veterinarian; "Candy has some severe fractures in her rear legs unfortunately. Her right rear leg has a fracture of the upper leg (femur) with the lower segment of this bone overriding the top segment pretty far-pushed up into the hip area. The lower leg bone (tibia) is also fractured on the right and has several fragments. On the left, the upper leg bone (femur) is fractured and has some fragments. These are BAD fractures. They can be put back together, but would likely need to do at different times, resulting in prolonged pain for her and I am anticipating several thousand dollars in cost. If you decide to send her to a rescue willing to take this on, she will need to be sedated to get proper positioning of the views of xrays she would need. I gave her pain medicine and took a survey view so we could get you a picture of what all was wrong. We will keep her pain controlled til I hear from you."

Honestly that's all TOH needed to hear!!!  We have the absolute BEST Ortho surgeon around. We made a commitment to her at that very moment, throwing all thought of expense to the wind and knowing if we would have a foster capable of dealing with a dog that could possibly need extensive healing and therapy. Once we made a commitment to her, she became part of our family, and we do everything we can for our family members!

Step one- notify vet and let her know to expect Candy.

Step two – Arrange transport from Eastern Kentucky to our vet in Harrison, OH (8 hour round trip)
(Thank you Mary and Mark for each bringing her part way!)

Step three-This morning Candy had the first of her surgeries.  They started on her worst side. In a few days, they'll do her other side. She has a very poor body condition, and also some infections that are also being addressed.

Step Four- Now the part where we need to rely on YOU- Our wonderful extended Tails of Hope family and supporters.  We need funds to help with her expenses. We really hate asking and relying on our supporters, but lately we've taken in a few more medical cases and illnesses than we normally do which has drained our emergency fund.

Even $1 from every person that reads this page would make a big difference. We truly appreciate every single donation. No matter how big or small.

We knew we had to help this girl. I mean can you look at her face and say she's not worth it?  We sure couldn't. Clearly her first chapter of life hasn't been good. Let's make the rest a fairy tale- a very happily ever after.

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!  We promise to keep everyone updated on Candy's medical plan and progress! She will also be looking for a perfect home AFTER she's healing.   We will be posting progress reports here and also on our facebook page.
