Help David get proper transportation
David Newcomb is 36 years old and bound to a wheelchair, but that doesn't stop him.
Growing up, David lived in Arkansas and joined the Navy at the age of 18. He attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Chicago. During boot camp, David started having issues with one of his legs. He eventually got discharged for medical reasons. Three years later, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He became completely wheelchair bound in 2006 on his 21st birthday, when he lost all function to both legs. He was given disability but because the amount was not enough to pay his bills and take care of his daughter, he had to find a job.
David has lived in Crestview for 15 years and has worked at Pizza Hut for almost 9 of those years. Pizza Hut recently relocated to the south side of town, near the hospital. David lives on the north side of town and his only form of transportation is a motorized wheelchair. Before Pizza Hut relocated, it was a 5 minute ride for him to work. Now, however, it takes him an hour to get there. In that hour, he has to cross multiple dangerous intersections and roads, worry about getting rained on, extreme Florida temperatures...ect. David was hit by a car in front of Wells Fargo in 2008. Then, in 2017 David was involved in a hit and run on Stillwell Blvd on his way home from work, which destroyed his motorized wheelchair.
Also, David has a 7 year old daughter, Melina, who lives in Pensacola. Melina is Davids reasoning for life, but due to transportation issues, David is unable to see her as much as he would like to. She is the only family David has that lives locally. When Melina comes to visit, she has to ride on his lap or walk beside him to go anywhere together.
Today we are trying to raise money for David in hopes to purchase a reliable and safe vehicle that fits his needs. We think that this could open many doors for David by allowing him to be able to see his daughter more, providing him with a safe way to work, or even possibly finding a different job/career. Our goal is 30k. 20k-25k would go towards a van for David. 5k-10k we want to use to help him get his driver's license, tax, tag, title and a years worth of car insurance. Any left over funds would all be used in relation to the vehicle and/or medical expenses.
