Help Emily Teach the Waygookin Way

Bilbo Baggins and I have a few things in common. We're both short in stature, we both enjoy food and we've both been content to just sit in our comfortable homes until someone or something came along to remind us that we're adventurers at heart. I've dreamed of traveling, but most of my trips have been short and far between. A while back, however, I decided that I was going to do something a bit crazy -- go to South Korea and teach English for a year. I will be known as a Waygook-in (Oegug-in), the Korean word for "foreigner". More accurately spelled 외국인 (I'm pretty sure...).
I know, I know -- Why would I want to do THAT? Do you know how far away that is? Do you even know any Korean? It's a whole different way of life.
One of the first responses I received from friends and family was, "Well, as long as it's not North Korea."
Rather supportive response, I think.
No matter the fears I may have or how many terrible scenarios others may bring up, I'm moving forward. Why? I want to immerse myself in a completely different culture, step out of my comfort zone, and make some sort of impact. The thought of teaching my own culture and language to students has excited me beyond belief as well.
I've been making preparations to leave next year (See blog
for more details on that). I'm taking a class, getting more experience, taking on more jobs and praying I haven't overlooked anything. But, I need a little help. Currently, I'm a freelance writer and work is hit and miss. You have great clients, and then you have people asking you to pour your sweat and tears into a piece only to pay you $3 for your troubles.
What would you be helping with?
- Fees/expenses for passport, application, visa
- Travel and some living expenses
- Supplies
Anything you can contribute I will be eternally grateful for, and prayers are always welcome. Thank you!
You can follow me in my adventures (both good and chaotic) through my blog.
