Help Heal Rachel! - A Life Changing Surgery
Donation protected
My name is Rachel Meyer and I'm 28 years old. To understand my current condition we have to go back to what happened and what caused it. I was eight months pregnant and was admitted into the maternity ward to be induced due to high blood pressure. My daughter ended up being breech so I had to have an emergency C-section. My daughter was born perfectly healthy and it was the happiest moment of my life. Three weeks later, on my husband's first Father's day, I started getting really bad chest and stomach pain so I went to the local emergency department where they found out that I had severe gallstones. Since it was a Sunday they sent me home to schedule surgery for the next week. I didn't make it that far. Later that same day I was back in the ED with the same pain but also severe vomiting. They didn't know what was wrong so they transferred me to a better hospital. It wasn't until a couple days later that any real treatment started because I was going into septic shock and crashing. I was rushed into surgery where they finally realized what was wrong. A gallstone traveled down into my pancreatic duct causing my pancreas to necrotize. The pancreas is a very dangerous organ and can cause fatal damage very easily and quickly. The damage my pancreas did to my body was very severe. I was left with a wide open abdomen with large fistulas protruding from my digestive system. A lot of complications occurred during my care to try and repair the damage that was done. I almost died several times and have had numerous surgeries, procedures, and tests to try and figure out a plan of care to improve my quality of life. Two years later here I am. Still surviving and pushing myself every day to get stronger, happier and healthier. I currently have fifteen fistulas throughout my abdomen and back. There's also a large hernia on my abdomen caused by the skin flap required to close a portion of my stomach. I'm currently NPO (no food or drink) and TPN (IV fed nutrition). dependent. This GoFundMe is to raise money to help me pay for medical supplies and to help raise the money needed to travel to Pittsburgh, PA to get a consultation with a surgeon to get a life-changing operation. The operation is for a small bowel and abdominal wall transplant that is best chance to close my fistulas and regain the ability to eat again and finally get me off of my TPN. Please help me reach this goal and help heal me!
