Helping a poor family to build a suitable house

Donation protected
This fund will be used to build a suitable house for a poor family in a remote village called Nikawewa, Thanamalwila in Sri Lanka. The village this family lives in is situated 200km away from the capital Colombo.

I met one of the family members 'Mahinda' during my last visit to Sri Lanka. He did not tell me a word about his suffering with the family but one of his friends informed me about it after few days of my meeting with Mahinda. Then, I visited the house and saw the suffering of his family. One of his brothers has been paralyzed for 8 years. Both parents are around  75 years of age and they are unable to work any more. Father is a heart patient for several years and he cannot do any job due to his illness. But he takes care of paralyzed Ruwan as much as he can. Mother tries to support the family by doing odd jobs in the area but she is too old to work.  Some days, she could not find any jobs. Mahinda goes to Thanamalwila Garment factory on daily basis and the salary he gets hardly enough for food. His younger brother works as a security guard at Udawalawe forest. He has two children bellow ten years and his family lives in the same small house. They spend a huge money for medicine; the paralyzed Ruwan, the father and mother require medicine on daily basis. However, they miss the dosages for some days due to financial problems. Please look at the photos; I think the size of it could be similar to your master bedroom. I saw inside the house. There were a few old plastic chairs, an old cupboard and one single bed surrounded by a rack. The whole family (8 people) lives in this small house. During my visit, I donated a brand-new wheelchair (Rs. 14116.25) to Ruwan with the collected funds by few children in Ottawa. Ruwan was delighted and he replaced it to the old one, which was badly damage.

I was requested by the family and few villagers to help them with a new house. The small house they live in is not adequate for eight persons at all and the quality of life in it is not satisfactory. It is flooded for even small rain. So, my intention is to raise fund and build a new house for them. Also, I think to donate some fund for Ruwan's medicine.

I am a trained Buddhist monk and I reside Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist temple at 1481 Heron Road, Ottawa, K1V 6A6 as the chief incumbent.

I expect financial support for this wholesome project. Plan to finish this fund raising by the end of October. I had some discussion with a builder in the area. According to him, the total amount for this project will be nearly Rs. 1700000.00 (little bit over one and half million rupees). Also I need to donate some money for Ruwan's medicine. Finally, this project requires Rs. 2000000.00 which is equal to C$ 16000.00. I will visit Sri Lanka in November, 2019 and can finalize the project with the builder.

You and me are fortunate to have a roof over our heads and can live without extreme weather conditions. But it is only a dream for this family. If we could do this generous act today before the situation get worse, it would be a great human act.

May all living beings be well, happy  and peaceful !
