Help Babies & Mothers Survive Birth

Donation protected
Every year, for the past 14 years, Karen + Rick Klemp and their group Hope 2 Others has travelled to Tanzania, Africa with one goal: to save the lives of mothers and babies during childbirth.

To accomplish this, they teach volunteers here in the US two World Health Organization-recognized programs:  Helping Babies Breathe (developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics) and Helping Mothers Survive (developed by Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University).  Then, each summer, this team of volunteers travels to Tanzania to teach local midwives, nurses, and other birth attendants these life-saving skills.

These two programs are special in that they allow evidence-based best practices to be implemented in even the most remote, low-resource areas.

The dream of building maternity clinic and birth center to more completely serve the Arusha area in Tanzania evolved slowly over the years.  Today, they have land, architectural renderings of the clinic compound and a large (LARGE!) warehouse full of donated medical items that need to find their way to Tanzania.  Beds, cribs, incubators, warming tables, ultrasound machines, exam tables and more await transport.

We are asking for your help in making this dream a reality.  It costs $20,000 to ship one 40-foot container to Tanzania.  Everything is repurposed in Africa, shipping containers included.  The empty containers will be refurbished into temporary clinic space for about $11,000.  The clinic site will need a well for water, and electricity.  This will cost about $15,000.

Yes, this is overwhelming, but so is the need.  Please consider donating to our efforts to send one shipping container with donated medical supplies and then refurbish that container into temporary clinic space. Every donation helps!
