Helping Hands for Healing: Supporting the Malin Family
Donation protected
Hey everyone, My name is Kire and I am reaching out on behalf of the Malin family who has recently faced a devastating accident. I’ve known the Malin Family for years and the five of them have become near and dear to my heart.
On June 6th (Ashley's Birthday), Ashley and the boys were woken up in the middle of the night to the news that Mike was involved in a serious motorcycle accident and they needed to get to the hospital immediately. He had already been at the hospital for many hours receiving life-saving treatments before Ashley and the boys were alerted of his accident. When Ashley arrived she was told Mike had a 50/50 shot of survival. He is currently in the ICU with severe injuries and is facing a long road to recovery.
As many of you know, Mike owns and operates Malin Irrigation, a family-owned irrigation business based in Carolina Beach. As the primary breadwinner, his absence has placed an immense financial strain on the family. Thankfully Ashley is on Summer break from teaching and is currently trying to keep the family business up and running, while also trying to keep everyday life for the boys (Brody (11), Decklyn (10), and Wesley (4)) as typical as possible during this difficult time.
In this uncertain time, they are in desperate need of our support. Mike has had numerous surgeries and medical procedures with many more to come. Recently they were able to take him off a ventilator and place a tracheotomy to help Mike work towards breathing independently. The healing process will be long and difficult, and the road to recovery will include intensive care and various therapies for a year or more. Medical bills are mounting, and everyday expenses are becoming increasingly difficult to manage with the loss of their main source of income.
I know many communities love the Malin family, and I hope to connect all of us to help support them during this challenging time. Any contribution you can make, or simply sharing their story, will help ease their financial burden so they can focus on recovery and healing.
Your generosity will make a tangible difference in their lives and provide them with the support they so desperately need.
As a community, we can show them they are not alone in this journey!
Thank you for your kindness and support.
EDIT Mike update from Ashley:
The boys were able to visit Mike both yesterday (6/29) and today (6/30). It was so nice to see them together. Mike is working really hard and sleeps a lot of the day. They have removed all tubes but his feeding tube and trach. They are discussing removing the trach as he has passed his swallow test and is breathing on his own. His jaw is still healing as well as his broken wrist. He is working hard with OT/PT/ST on various goals.
His next steps are to go to an LTAC center (we do not know when he will go, but are hopeful this week or next). Unfortunately this center is all the way in rocky mount so his mother will be going with him and the boys and I will take day trips as we can. The goal of the center is to get him as independent as possible and their program's first session is 21 days of intensive therapies.
This next step will be hard on all of us and Mike has a lot of work to do but he knows what he is fighting for.
We are so thankful for our community and all of your well wishes.
