Helping Immigrants Access Resources in Custody

80% of immigrants in detention do not have an attorney to explain to them what is going on nor represent them before the courts. After spending a year in detention and witnessing the experience of women in detention I went on to return to school to try to make a difference on the ground level.
I witnessed women unable to access assistance/information, the guaranteed basic human rights to be able to make informed decisions about their legal situation, facing separation from children, forced to go back to abusive partners, fraudulent attorneys and more. I created the Detainee Advocacy Project. I have made the Maine Immigration Resource Guide available for free download for the individual, family, friends and advocates of those in custody at the website www.detaineeadvocacy.org
I need assistance taking the next step, to get a copy of it into all facilities that hold immigrants. 80% of the facilities in Maine have nothing to guide the immigrant in making informed decisions for the welfare of the family or themselves. This is where you can help! Through Amazons publishing company I can print and distribute this to the 25 facilities in the state of Maine that hold immigrants! This guide explains the immigration system, how to hold the agencies accountable for denying basic human rights and the available resources in the community. It is meant to assist immigrants including victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, the LGBTQ community, family separation, and unaccompanied/undocumented children.
With the potential new facilities being built in the state of Maine, laws and government changing and our growing immigrant population, lets make sure that they find our community to be one that supports them in finding justice if they find themselves at the mercy of the courts.
It has taken me 4 years to put this together, please help get it into the hands of those that need it the most!
