Helping Jon Burchett

I am reaching out to all my friends, family, and even strangers to ask for some help today. Some of you might know that we have had a really tough year. Like most, Covid-19 has made life very difficult. It’s hard for me to ask for help when I know some people didn’t get to keep their jobs and are struggling also. My husband Jon is the main supporter of my family. His employer cut his pay by 20% when Covid-19 struck. Which is about $2000 less a month. We were barely making it then. Over the last year, Jon has been in 2 car accidents (3 months apart). The last one he never should have walked away from. I am forever grateful to whomever was watching over him that morning.

We took Jon to a specialist and he is in pretty bad shape. For starters he has arthritis throughout his spine which is very painful in itself.  Scoliosis in 2 places and 4 degenerated discs in his back which are fusing together. 2 are at the bottom of his back which will really affect his mobility and the other 2 are up in his neck. Jon doesn’t have many options to correct this and he will never be 100% pain free. If they fuse together he will no longer be mobile. He could end up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

After consulting with doctors from The East Bay Spine and Disc Institute in Livermore https://youtu.be/UQICmlkHgag  they feel that the best treatment for Jon would be Decompression Therapy which has a 90% success rate. It would be 2-3 times a week for 24 weeks. Decompression Therapy is not covered by any insurance. We have Kaiser, who so far hasn't come up with a solution other than pain medications and surgery. Having surgery now would only be about 30% successful. At this point in his health, we feel that he needs the most beneficial procedure now.

Since the accidents we have fallen behind in all our bills.  Getting insulin for my son is the first thing every month. Then starts the struggle with whether I pay PGE or pay rent. Do I pay the water bill or the garbage bill? Do I not pay anything and buy a bed that Jon can sleep in? I don’t know anymore. I have to believe that this therapy is more important right now.

He can’t function much longer without treatment. He’s in excruciating pain all the time. He can’t even sleep but 2-3 hours a night. Sadly, our bed is very old and needs to be replaced. He isn't able to sleep in it because it's just not comfortable for him. I find him sleeping at the kitchen table in a hard chair. Half way through the night, I find him sleeping sitting up on the couch or even on the floor. He has only sleep in a regular bed 2 times since the end of April.

All this and not once does he complain. He is more concerned with our son’s Type 1 Diabetes and my health which isn't great since I was diagnosed with the beginning stages of heart failure back in March. He isn't one to ask for help so I am asking. I am asking for all of us.

Please if you can spare any amount, it would greatly help us. Thank you for reading this and God Bless You All ~ Amy
