Mike Pruette, owner of Celtic Leatherworks and The Liberty Book Company, is well known to many. He is the gentle, witty, bearded D&D nerd who has made his mark in North and South Carolina historical groups, the two local bookstores he's managed, and most importantly, through the leatherworking business he and his family have built over the past decade. Mike embodies the entrepreneurial American Dream.

 

On Monday, June 6, Mike had a massive heart attack at home. Despite the prompt actions of his wife, Adonna, his outcome is still extremely uncertain. After emergency heart surgery, he has been on life support since the 6th, and his condition remains critical at this time.  UPDATE: Unfortunately, Mike passed away, surrounded by family, on the night of June 14.

 

What isn't uncertain is the crippling financial blow that this will deal to his family. Like many independent business owners, Mike did not have personal medical insurance. His family's needs came first, the needs of his businesses came second, and his own needs were a distant third. That has left them facing a looming financial crisis in addition to their fears and anxiety over his unknown prognosis.

 

Please consider assisting in any way possible. All proceeds will go towards the repayment of Mike's medical bills, his ongoing care as he survives on life-sustaining support for his heart and kidneys, and the extensive therapy his recovery will entail. Everything helps, and any burden that we can remove from his family's shoulders will allow them to focus on what matters most: the husband and father they dearly need.

Mike's death is still something that feels unreal to the many people who knew and loved him. His father, Cecil, and wife, Adonna, have organized his funeral service. Mike will be laid to rest near his Mother at Tirzah ARP church in York, South Carolina on Saturday. On behalf of the family, thank you so much for the support you've provided, and for the outpouring of love that reminds us all of the extent of Mike's impact on this world.
