Helping the wings to make memories
We are raising money to allow the Wing family to make as many memories as possible in the short few months they have left, here is their story...
We welcomed 2020 with such promise but within a short amount of time our family life was changed forever.
Early January, Darren had a biopsy which showed he had cancer. This was a huge shock but we were positive, thinking there would be treatment. Things would be hard but we would get through it!! Unfortunately at the Consultant appointment everything changed. We were told Darren had a very rare incurable aggressive cancer called Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NET) with a prognosis of 12/18months.
The worst day was telling our children Sophie 16, Jake 13 and Jessie 9, that their dad was going to die. We also have a toddler Joshua 2 1/2.
Early in February Darren started his first of two rounds of chemo - he was so poorly each time he was admitted to hospital. Things were tough but at least we had the support from family and friends. We had so many plans of things we wanted to do with the children... places to take them!!
Then came the Coronavirus which meant we had to lockdown and have all our support taken away!!
In May, Darren had a scan which showed the tumours had reduced and the consultant was happy to wait 12 Weeks until his next scan. This was such a relief for us both but it was short lived, within a week Darren‘s mobility declined and he was in a lot of pain. They re-scanned him and it show he had two new, large tumours in his pelvis, which they treated with radiotherapy and this allowed Darren to regain some mobility.
This week, we had appointment with the consultant. The options offered were an intense chemo which could give him 1-6 months or to stop treatment with prognosis of 3 months. Darren decided to stop and use the time to make memories with the children as best we can. We hope the lockdown eases a bit to allow us to do this!
We are so overwhelmed and grateful for all the support we have received from family, friends and the community with daily meal deliveries, at such a difficult time it really does help lighten the load. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring and through the ups and downs of the last 6 months the only thing I do know is we will cherish every moment
This is a fundraiser for the Wing family and whilst they are hoping to book a holiday, they can choose how they spend the money however it suits them to make the next few months a little bit easier for them...
