Helping Xenia's Friend and Family Fleeing the War

When I was studying abroad in Rome at university, I met my closest friend. Approximately three weeks ago, I received a call from her that she was in SOS in the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev with her family stranded in a bunker with no way out. She informed me that if I do not jump in somehow, this will be the end of her life as well as her family's. I was up every night for the past 2-3 weeks in close contact with her work colleague as well as several individuals on Instagram to get her out of this emergency situation. After several long nights and close connections, I was able to accomplish my goal of getting her and her mother out of the horrendous war with the help of a 22 year old German lady which I have never met before, helping me in every way possible and picked up both of them from the Romanian border after a 20 hour drive. After a long week of no rest and limited supply of food as well as leaving their family behind in the war, the two were mishandled by the Hungarian border control as they were trying to cross through to make their final destination in Austria at our apartment. The Hungarians initially refused to permit them to enter. After 11 hours of being stranded in an outdoor tent by Hungarian police, we finally found a way to have both released. They have been at our apartment in Austria now for about a week and are on their way to recovery after having caught COVID-19. We are doing everything to help this poor family who witnessed this disaster with their own eyes as well as leaving many relatives behind to seek safety and a new life in Austria.
