Helping Sudan - Relief, Recovery, and Hope

“Waking up to my new alarm clock: the sounds of bombardment, though sleep is difficult to come by… it’s no longer day and night, but periods of gunfire and periods of quiet” - Kholood Khair.

On the morning of Saturday, 15th of April, violent and rapidly escalating armed warfare erupted in Khartoum and other cities across Sudan. This conflict is between two highly armed groups – the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Both have exploited the country for decades and have now escalated into an armed dispute over the country’s governance.

By the 22nd of April, just one week after its outbreak, this conflict had claimed over 400 lives, with more than 3,000 people reporting serious injuries over the span of five days. Hospitals were erratically targeted across the tri-state capital, forcing over 70% of them to shut down (16 of which were irreparably damaged). These statistics only account for the first couple of weeks of the war.

Currently, as the war approaches its fourth month, the UN and other international parties have failed to convince the warring sides to open safe passages for emergency supplies. All initiatives calling for dialogue and peace negotiations have also failed. The death toll has risen to thousands, including atrocious massacres committed in the Western region of Darfur.

The health sector is completely demolished due to the destruction of major hospitals in the capital, and medical supplies are running low throughout the country. Even in areas far from the conflict zone, citizens are struggling to find basic painkillers in local pharmacies. The UN estimates that over 2 million Sudanese people have fled the capital alone, but real figures are believed to be much higher.

Internally, the people of Sudan are struggling as the country’s infrastructure and services have collapsed. Those abroad face severe hardships as they've lost all their savings and belongings due to large-scale embezzlements in the capital and other areas. Refugees fleeing the conflict in Darfur endure horrific conditions at the Chadian-Sudanese borders, deprived of food and shelter.

Our coalition of UK-based Sudanese societies and universities has united to coordinate an agile aid response. We’re dedicated to providing critical and lifesaving aid for war-affected communities in Sudan. Our efforts include food distributions, setting up local food banks in the most impacted areas, and supplying essential medicine and baby food to displaced orphans in collaboration with NGOs. In addition to direct aid, we are using part of our funds to officially register Helping Sudan as a charity and invest in media, advertising, and outreach - ensuring we can grow our impact and reach more people in need. However, 100% of the funds raised through GoFundMe go directly towards helping people in Sudan or strengthening The Helping Sudan Organisation to deliver even more aid. We take nothing for ourselves - every penny is for the cause.
