Help with Katie's Medical Expenses
Donation protected
My son Ed and his wife Kim live in Florida. They have four children together and Kim has a son from a previous marriage who is Autisitc. The children's ages range from 23 to 4.
In 2007 Katie was born. She was a beautiful baby. She appeared to be perfect in every way. When she was 15 months old she started to regress. She wasn't progressing normally, she had trouble walking and talking. She underwent all kinds of tests and was disgnosed with a neurological disorder known as Rett Syndrome. It's a brain disorder that only girls survive after birth. This disorder consists of the symptoms of severe Epilepsy, Parkinsons, Cerebral Palsy and Autism wrapped all in one.
On Aug. 2, 2016 she was once again operated on due to the appearnace of a large mass in her stomach that is still being biopsied. The doctors were planning on inserting a V.N.S. on Aug. 16th in hopes of controlling the seizures. Her seizures are so bad at times that she stops breathing and turns blue. She requires constant supervision. She also requires very costly medication and oxygen not to mention the copayments for all the doctor visit and procedures. She is currently under the care of 9 different doctors. Due to a decision by the insurance company that surgery has now been put on hold and she is still suffering from the siezures.
Katie's mother, Kim, was diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently in remission. Her treatment costs have added to the families already extensive medical costs. On July 21st of this year the family had to pay $2000 upfront to have the chemo port removed from Kim's chest before it became infected. This was the money they needed for the mortgage payment.
Katie's father Ed works two jobs to provide for his family. He is a hospital psychlogist and also does group therapy at night. Kim has to stay at home with Katie as she requires around the clock care.
Katie is in need of things the insurance will not provide such as a new wheelchair. Also a mobility van with a special lift as she is getting to heavy for Kim to lift her. She is also in need of a specail shower chair as she can't sit in the bathtub properly.
Any help that you can provide to this family would be greatly appreciated! These are two great parents that have done everything they can to take care of their children even when faced with the most dire of circumstances and they always do it with love! Besides all of the expenses from Katie's and Kim's illnesses they still have the normal expenses of raising five children.
