Help Farmer Maria after Hit & Run

Donation protected
September 7, 2017 Maria was driving her truck down the road  at 5:30am. When you are a farmer and mother as dedicated as Maria, you're used to getting an early start to the day. Suddenly, a truck struck Maria and she veered off the road into the brush. The passenger of the other truck cursed at her loudly and sped off leaving Maria stranded, injured, and scared.

Maria was born in the Congo and spent many years living in at a refugee camp in Tanzania. Through a resettlement program, Maria made her way out of Tanzania and into the US.  I met Maria and her husband Forrest six years ago when Maria sold their produce at the Hilo Farmer's Market. She worked with her baby  on her back, swaddled in colorful cloth. Their produce is known for radiant colors: purple cauliflower, multi colored green beans, and rainbow swiss chard.

"I love the dirt, it makes me feel close to God," Maria tells me when I ask her why she likes to farm.

Maria is lucky that she wasn't more seriously injured in the accident. She is in a great deal of pain from the ordeal and obviously shaken. The police have not been able to locate the other party.

Maria and her husband are local farmers, who dedicate their life to feeding the people within their community.
The truck Maria uses to deliver produce to their stand and transport the family, is beyond repair.

Please donate to assist this incredible family purchase a used truck so they can continue to transport produce.
