Let's Help Out Momma Schaefer!

This Year | 2016

My name is Lindsey and I am now Lisa Schaefer's 24 year old daughter. The fight continues for my mom and her battle with cancer. She first started fighting this battle in 2008, she had her thyroid removed and was in remission for almost 7 years. She began treatments again at Duke Cancer Center December 2015 but they have been unsuccessful. She will be receiving additonal radiation treatments in a few weeks. Needless to say, the support of our family and friends so far has been incredible but we are still fighting. The medical bills are piling up and any help that we could receive would be appreciated so much!

Please read below to learn more about my mother and her battle with cancer.

Last Year | 2015

My name is Lindsey and I am Lisa Schaefer's 23 year old daughter. Before I begin with this story, I really want to preface this with one thing. My mom would never, ever ask for help on her own. She is the strongest, most independent, stubborn, selfless woman I have ever met in my entire life.

Unfortunately, she needs help. In the last 23 years of my life, I have grown up looking up to her. I have been amazed time and time again by her resilience, spirit and all-around incredible passion for life, love, and helping others. She has dedicated her life to helping people through her work. Even on days when my mom can barely get out of bed, she tells me that her patients and their recovery inspire her to keep going.

My mother is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 7 years ago. She underwent treatment and was in remission for 6 years. Unfortunately, that cancer has returned. She will be traveling to Duke in the beginning of December to begin treatment again at the Duke Cancer Center.

My mom has also been fighting lupus since she was my age. For those of you who may not know what lupus is, it is a chronic, autoimmune disorder that damages the body over time (skin, joints, and/or organs.) Her body essentially creates autoantibodies that attack the healthy tissue, while it should only be attacking "foreign invaders." With lupus, you constantly have periods of good health and periods of really bad health. Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, painful and swollen joints, fevers, the butterfly rash across the face, abnormal blood clotting, raynaud's, swelling in feet, hands, and around eyes, and more.

I am reaching out to family and friends because we need your help. My mom has invested so much into her community, her physical therapy work, her family, her friends. She is an absolutely amazing person who has touched so many people's hearts. She is a single mom who raised me and my older sister, Lauren. She has worked so, so, so hard to give me and Lauren an incredible life. She always tried to give us what we needed or wanted, even when she was tired, sick or could not afford it.

Even with another obstacle, my mom faces it with the most positive attitude. Between the cost of her lupus medication, the cancer treatments, and the fact that she will be missing work, my mom is struggling financially.

If you know my mom, you know that she still has a smile on her face. She still gets up every morning and dedicates her day to helping her patients. Some days, her lupus is so bad that she can't even move her hands for 15-20 minutes and yet, she gets up, drives to work, and performs physical therapy on her patients all day. She does this because, at her core, my mother loves to help other people and make them better.

If you know my mom, you also know that she is one of the most wonderful people in the entire world. She deserves every gift given to her because she is such a gift and blessing to those who get the chance to know her.

It's my mom's turn to receive help and to be made better. I know her strength and positive attitude will get her through this but any financial help would make this so much easier in her and my family.

Every dollar will help. Please consider helping us as we help my mom through this battle. We appreciate every donation. Thank you so much. Even if you cannot donate, feel free to leave a kind or encouraging message. Kind words will be just as helpful! Thank you :)
