Help Nash Murath Heal

Nash Murath is someone who always brings a smile to your face.

A bright young man with a big personality, Nash earned good grades, was the starting catcher for his high school baseball team for two years, and not long ago was a part-time chicken wing “chef” at the Wing Wagon  to earn money for college.

Although his academic and work accomplishments are many, his greatest strength is his BIG heart. For the past three summers, Nash served as a counselor at Camp Promise, a camp for kids, teens, and adults with neuromuscular disorders. Nash loves working with his campers and could get the quietest camper to become the star of the talent show. He also loves working with the Camp Promise staff and had been planning to continue working in camps this summer.

In 2018, Nash returned to his home state of Colorado as a Daniels Scholar  to pursue Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, and then, in the blink of an eye, tragedy struck. Also, in late 2018, Nash and some friends founded a non-profit to extend their work with young people with neuromuscular disorders, called Muscular Dystrophy Adventures.

On March 10, 2019, while joking around and having fun with some friends at school, Nash fell over an apartment balcony rail and landed three stories below.

Thanks to the expert and compassionate care he received at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO, Nash survived his accident, and in the 3.5 months since then he has made substantial progress – so much so that on June 26 he finally discharged and headed home from nationally-recognized Craig Hospital in Denver and will continue going there for extensive outpatient therapy.

Despite achieving this significant milestone, Nash’s road back to health continues and will require much support from his family, friends, and the medical community.

Nash is recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Although his family will be with him every step of the way, his recovery costs are significant and long-term, and we appreciate any assistance you can provide to help offset these expenses moving forward.

Thank you for taking a moment to read about Nash and to think of his family. If you cannot contribute at this time, we would very much appreciate if you can share his story with friends on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. Positive thoughts, well wishes, and/or prayers that you can send Nash’s way can certainly also help him along his road to recovery.

Gratefully,

The DiPerna-Murath Family

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who are we?

This GFM campaign is led by Nash’s uncles Paul DiPerna and Jim DiPerna, in coordination with his mother, Jeannine DiPerna.

Why is fundraising necessary now?

Nash’s immediate medical expenses were mostly covered by his mother’s health insurance. However, we expect long-term rehabilitation, caregiving needs, and accommodations to be expensive and evolving for the foreseeable future.

Nash’s current condition will require rigorous therapies for at least the next year. His energy level varies and can run low after therapy, other physical activity, or extended interactions with people.

Nash will require full-time caregiving and companionship for a minimum of 12 months post-injury.

How is Nash doing since he got out of his coma in April?

When he first woke up from his coma, Nash was unable to speak due to having a tracheostomy but recognized family members and long-term friends. He was unable to balance himself standing or sitting up.

Thankfully Nash’s speech and motor skills have returned rapidly. He will still need physical therapy for now to fine-tune movement such as running, balance, and to get back to his usual physical endeavors.

At first, he had no short-term memory, but that is gradually building. There is still a long way to go in order to regain more memory capabilities , processing speed, and competence with daily living skills so that he can return to independence and the continuation of his bright future.

On June 26th, Nash discharged from Craig Hospital, but he will still head to Craig for 3 days per week, 4-6 hours per day of physical, occupational, speech, and other rehab therapies. In addition, he will practice writing, reading, and critical thinking analysis at home and in the community with family and friends.
