#HelpPravinRecover
I am Kavitha Shanmugam fundraising for my husband, Pravinraj Radha’s medical treatment and I need your help now more than ever. Currently Pravin is in a state of coma with slow and steady improvement but has a long road to recovery.
Pravin, aged 36 years, and I have been married for four years and we wished for a journey of life together for decades to come. Unfortunately, it all came shattering on the night of May 11, 2022 when Pravin met with a bicycle accident just outside our neighborhood in Charlotte, NC.
While I went to visit my parents in India with the plan of Pravin joining me a month later, I woke up to the news of him admitted in the ICU. On Wednesday, May 11th, around 6.30 pm, Pravin took his newly bought bicycle (purchased two days earlier) for a ride outside his neighborhood. While riding, he lost control and hit his head hard on the road flying over the bicycle's handlebar. Immediately, he was rushed to the Atrium hospital, where he was stabilized with life support. Unfortunately, doctors diagnosed him with severe Grade 3 Traumatic Brain Injury (Diffuse Axonal Injury) with fractures on the left cheek. Since the accident, he has been in a state of deep coma. In addition, his left eye is almost blinded due to the fracture. But we are all hopeful that he will recover, especially given his age. We aren’t sure how long he will remain in a coma or what condition he will be in when he emerges, but we are steadfast in knowing that he will recover. Firstly, I had a big struggle getting back to the US as my visa had to be re-stamped at the Consulate before entering the US. The next hurdle is around the care he must receive after the critical care treatment.
What started as a great year turned upside down in a few seconds. Our dreams of owning a small home and expanding our family crumbled at that moment. As most of you know, Pravin is always remembered as an ever-smiling, kind, and soft-spoken person. He is a good samaritan, abiding by all rules and regulations. He is an active person who loves driving, photography and hiking. Last year, we even made it to Le Conte Lodge for a night's stay after a long hike up the Smokies. His systematic planning and risk-averse attitude have always been envied among his friends. This accident and his current situation are great ironies that life throws out to you.
It is not our nature to ask for financial support, but we want to make sure Pravin has the best possible care once he is discharged from the hospital (beyond the limited coverage of his insurance). We are exploring various skilled nursing facilities, in Charlotte and possibly India, depending on the level of support and rehab he will need. This will be pretty costly (hundreds of thousands of dollars or more) to maintain his care and well-being for many years to come. The timeline is still very much up in the air.
We are already so grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and good wishes from everybody in Pravin’s life. We firmly believe that our positivity in the past few weeks has given Pravin the strength to continue fighting. It might be a long road ahead, but Pravin is a resilient fighter, and he will make it through this stronger than ever.
The recovery can take years, and Pravin has a long road ahead. I am unemployed and staying here on a dependent visa. With all my close family in India, I’d need financial support to stay here, care for my husband, and pay his medical bills. So we continue to pray and hope for miracles.
Any contribution, large or small, would benefit Pravin’s recovery. The funds raised will go towards his hospitalization expenses, Air-ambulance transportation to India upon discharge and allowance, nursing and rehab care until he wakes up and gets back to some level of normalcy, and for family care.
Every penny of your contribution is greatly appreciated and to our friends and families who aren't in a position to contribute, we request you to keep us in your prayers and spread the campaign link among your circles.
Thank you all!
