May Day! Springtime festivals and May baskets! What should have been a beautiful day of fun and celebration for the Henning family (Kevin, Amber, and 3-year-old Jaylen), began in panic, when Amber awoke to find 41 year old Kevin gasping for air. After calling 911 and performing CPR, Amber watched as the paramedics restarted Kevin’s heart. He remained unresponsive.
Fast forward to a few days in the Intensive Care Unit where Kevin remained unresponsive and ventilated. After numerous tests, while family and friends prayed for Kevin and doctors worked diligently to find a cause, it was at last determined that he suffered from severe pneumonia and a heart attack. However, these conditions were the least of their worries. During those few brief moments from the time Kevin’s heart stopped until it was restarted, his brain was deprived of oxygen. As of the date of this writing, Kevin is unable to do most of the things he could do before. The things we take for granted every day like driving a car, brushing his teeth, or holding his son.
The final fate of the Henning family is not yet known, but the doctors agree that the effects of the lack of oxygen to his brain has left him with acquired brain damage that can only be improved with extensive rehabilitation. The goal is to send Kevin to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln Nebraska.
The financial burdens of this tragedy may devastate this family, especially since Kevin is the breadwinner of the family. The cost of his hospital stay alone may be thousands and thousands of dollars. Kevin will need continuous occupational and physical therapy. Kevin has finally had his breathing tube removed, but still remains on a feeding tube as doctors don’t know if he can chew or swallow. He has a very long road ahead of him.
If there was ever a family to help out, the Hennings are at the top of the list. Any time their friends and/or loved ones are in need, they are the first to step up without any hesitation. Kevin is a loving father, devoted husband, a brother, a son, and a cherished friend. Let’s show him and his family the generosity that they display in their everyday life.
