It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since the accident. On August 23, 2017 God welcomed beautiful Elise Grace Johns into Heaven. On behalf of the family, thank you for all the love and support you’ve provided over the past year. Your prayers, gifts, meals and financial donations mean more than you will ever know. As you can imagine, his week has been exceptionally hard for the Johns family. Please continue to love all over them as they need it now more than ever. No matter near or far, I pray each of you are doing well. God Bless, Adrien
On the morning of Wednesday, August 23rd, our friend Jason Johns was in a tragic car accident while taking his three children to school. He was side-swiped by a young man driving a large pickup truck which resulted in his truck crashing into a light pole filled with cement. His wife Sarah was at work during the time of the accident. Jason spent the first day away from his family being treated at a nearby hospital for a partially ruptured spleen and other broken bones and was released 10 hours later to go be with his wife and children. While in the hospital the only way he could communicate with his wife and the doctors was via the phone. As you could imagine, that was extremely difficult for Jason. While his injuries were minimal compared to those of his children (partically ruptured spleen, cuts/gashes throughout this body), he was still in pain and under the care of his physician. Kaden (10) spent the day in the ER and ended up with a broken arm/wrist. While he is doing much better now, he still dealing with the mental aftermath as he recalls what happened in the accident. He has good days and bad days, however, he's a very strong, loving kid who only wants to see his sister Hope get better. Hope (5) suffered a ruptured appendix, a collapsed lung and multiple fractures to her spine. She has been in ICU since the day of the accident and was given a prognosis of paralysis in her fingers and from the waist down. Even though the prognosis still stands, the family stands firm in their faith that she will be healed from head to toe! Each day Hope continues to get stronger and stronger. She's mentally alert and very frusterated with her inability to move around. She's constantly being evaluated and the family is doing everything they can to keep her distracted/happy as her precious body heals. She's able to communicate now that all tubes has been removed from her throat and it's amazing to watch her progress. Everyday Hope is able to spend time participating in therapy. This includes: phyiscal, occupational, music and speech. That said, she recently had a set back when she came down with pnemonia and a staph infection and still hasn't been able to breathe on her own. In order for her to continue being treated at Children's Mercy in KC (only a few miles from her home) she will need to show dramatic progress both mentally and physically. If she doesn't, she will be transfered to an East Coast facility where she can get specialized treatment. The family is asking for prayers this doesn't happen! (Update 1/4/18: Hope has been transferred to a speciliazedchildren's hospital in Baltimore where she's now getting specialized care. She is now fully off her ventilator and is getting stronger each day. her diagnosis of paralysis still stands. Sarah has found an apartment close by and will be living there for at least three to six months while Hope heals!) Elise (8) was also tragically impacted. She suffered multiple spine fractures and had severe swelling in her brain. She spent five days in the ICU where she laid peacefully in her bed surrounded by her family and friends while her heart beat on its own. After countless tests, scans and different doctor's evaluating her, she was prounounced brain dead and went to be home with Jesus on August 28th. The family held a beautiful Celebration of Life remebering their beautiful daughter Elise Grace Johns. Her big brown eyes, spunky personality and warm spirit will live in our hearts forever. For anyone who doesn't know the John's family, Jason is from Kansas City has been serving as the pastor of a inner-city KC church for the past year. He moved his family from Colorado and has been making a tremendous impact in the lives of urban youth and families while at the same time receiving no salary. He started college the week before the accident to gain more competency as a counselor, teacher, and leader. Meanwhile, Sarah has been providing income as a fitness instructor at a gym in Downtown KC. Even though it's been over a month since they accident, they still need ongoing financial support to focus on the healing of their family. Anything you can do to help this family would be a blessing!! As a personal friend of both Jason and Sarah, I can tell you that there’s no one more deserving of financial help than my dear friends. I spent 10 days being in and out of the hospital watching these WONDERFUL parents remain hopeful, positive and uplifting during their darkest hours. When close friends and family were having their moments, Jason and Sarah would lift them up. This couple is always positive, happy, reliable, honest and full of the life of Jesus Christ. Anytime my family has ever been in need, they have stopped their world to help us…..now it’s time for us to help them! For those of you who weren't able to attend Elise's Celebration of Life. The message of Grace was amazing and Sarah and Jason's message was beyond inspiring!
