While the letters “ALS” may spark images of the Ice Bucket Challenge or Lou Gerhig and Stephen Hawking, most people don’t know what ALS is. They might not know how many young women are diagnosed with ALS, or what this disease takes from our lives. They might not know how hopeless it can feel - that ALS is incurable and 90% of us will die within 2-5 years of receiving this diagnosis.
Her ALS Story (HAS) is a group of women diagnosed with ALS before their 35th birthday. For most of us, an ALS diagnosis means giving up careers, the lives we thought we would be living, the dreams we had of our futures. Our new reality is consumed by fighting a battle against a relentless, terminal illness. Our mission at Her ALS Story is to raise awareness and foster a community where women can educate and support one another to live their best lives. In the darkest moments of life with this disease, we have found light in the support from one another.
Every year, we organize a multi-day event to bring together members from all over the country. This is no small feat, given the enormous obstacles in traveling with this disease. Most of us require full-time caregivers, feeding tubes, assistive devices for breathing and other equipment. But like previous years, this gives us the chance to meet friends with ALS in person - often for the first time. This support is life-changing, and helps us normalize our experiences with ALS. We create lasting memories and solidify friendships that will strengthen our community immeasurably. ALS may be incurable, but you can help us embrace living.
Any help, big or small, would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, sharing this GoFundMe can go a long way towards helping us raise the money we need.
