Helping Mark Herbison

Friends, Family, and countless people inspired by his adventures were shocked to hear that Mark Herbison had a serious paragliding accident in the mountains of Utah.

"After 20+ years of adventuring in the mountains, I’ve gone and properly wrecked myself. I had a bad launch in strong winds on Monroe Peak. I lost control and was swung back into the rock face just below launch. Stunned, I knew I was in bad shape when I saw a stream of blood spurting from an open fracture of my ankle onto the volcanic rock beneath me. The response was impressive, with fellow pilots on me within seconds, applying a tourniquet and stabilizing me as Utah SAR was activated. I thank the hospital staff for their efforts to keep me comfortable and for the friends that have spent time with me. Those moments will never be forgotten."

Thankfully, after two surgeries abroad, Mark was transported to Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday, October 5th. His medical team has determined that the best option to ensure Mark WILL continue to enjoy his adventures in the mountains is to amputate his lower leg.

"I am excited to face the challenge and return to the mountain sports I have always loved."

"Herbies Helpers" are busy making arrangements for Mark. Adaptations for around his house, travel and medical expenses, and several prostheses will all help Mark get back into the adventure world he loves and enjoys.

"I need my community more than ever to navigate my new reality."
