In Madagascar, the influence and stories of famous men are widely known but women’s stories have mostly been left out of historical, political and social narratives of Madagascar’s past and present.
HerStory Madagascar wants to change that!
Throughout history and today, Malagasy women have and continue to hold positions of power and influence, are leaders, writers, artists, creators, scientists, conservationists and more.
HerStory Madagascar, a registered non-profit based in Madagascar, will produce the first ever illustrated children’s book highlighting the achievements and experiences of 50 Malagasy women. Designed for young malagasy girls aged 10 - 16 years, the book will draw attention to the diversity and wealth of experiences that Malagasy women have played in the past and continue to bring to Malagasy society’s present. Some of these women will be well known, others will finally get the chance to have their stories told.
The simple to read stories will be researched and written by a team of all female Malagasy authors and accompanied by beautiful portraits designed and illustrated by some of Madagascar’s most talented female illustrators, artists and graphic designers.
The book will be published in 3 languages: Malagasy, English and French to help students who are also learning these languages at school and so people outside of Madagascar will also have the opportunity to learn about the incredible stories of these women.
We aim to produce and distribute 1,000 books for free to public schools throughout Madagascar.
Help us to reach our first fundraising milestone!
To fund HerStory Madagascar’s Book Project from start to finish, we need a total of $30,000 AUD (approximately $25,000 USD).
However, we would like to focus our fund-raising efforts on collecting enough funds to complete the first phase of our Book Project, which includes:
-Paying the writers to research and write up the stories of each of the 50 women
-Paying the artists and illustrators to draw/paint/design the portraits of the 50 women
-Paying for translators to translate the book into Malagasy, French and English
-Paying for a designer to pull together all of the content, text and images into one beautifully designed book
Our first goal is thus to collect $10,000 AUD ($8,000 USD) or the equivalent to €6,500/£5,600
Thanks to your generous donations, we have so far raised approximately 25% of our goal – we need just $8,000 AUD ($6,000 USD) more to reach our new fundraising goal!
Once we reach our fundraising goal, we will be able to start the first phase of our Book Project, at the end of which we can show you what the final version of the book will look like. The book will then be available for pre-order both locally (in Madagascar) and via international shipping.
Women are often underpaid compared to men or are expected to volunteer their time. HerStory Madagascar’s ethos is to financially compensate all contributors to the book fairly based on their skills, time and effort.

HerStory Madagascar, is a registered association in Madagascar whose purpose is to use various forms of storytelling to increase awareness of the issues affecting Malagasy women and to highlight the important contributions they have made to Madagascar's history, culture and society. For HerStory Madagascar, we want to support storytelling in the form of books and print media as well as other creative forms of storytelling such as art, film and dance etc - any medium that can tell a story.

Conçu pour les jeunes filles malgaches âgées de 10 à 16 ans, il attirera l'attention sur la diversité et la richesse des expériences que ces femmes ont jouées dans le passé et continuent d'apporter à la société malgache actuelle. Certaines seront bien connues, d'autres auront enfin la chance de voir leur histoire racontée.
Les histoires simples à lire seront recherchées et écrites par une équipe de femmes auteurs malgaches et seront accompagnées de beaux portraits conçus et illustrés par de talentueuses illustratrices, artistes et graphistes du pays.
Le livre sera publié en trois langues : malgache, anglais et français afin d'aider les élèves dans l’apprentissage de ces langues. De plus, les personnes extérieures à Madagascar auront ainsi l'occasion de découvrir les incroyables histoires de ces femmes.
