The Kohl Family

As many of you know, our parents, Mary and Gary, our sister, Catherine, and her boyfriend, Alex, were involved in a near-fatal car crash on Memorial Day 2023. While in Indiana heading home from Chicago, a driver heading west crossed the median and hit our family’s car head-on at 70 mph. The car flipped on impact and caught fire. The good samaritans driving behind jumped into action pulling all four of them from the burning car and carried them to safety while waiting to be transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne Indiana via life flight and ambulance.
Catherine and Alex suffered multiple fractures and abrasions. They were discharged after a few days in the hospital and are now home recovering with the help of therapy, wound care, and rest.
Our parents were rushed to emergency surgery upon arriving at the hospital where the doctors were able to fix all life-threatening issues. The days to follow consisted of additional surgeries, roughly 15 between the two of them, and time spent in the ICU in critical condition.
Our mom broke 15 different bones, breaking all 4 extremities, and suffered internal and external trauma. Our dad received life-saving heart surgery, shattered his lower extremities, and suffered internal and external trauma.
After 23 days in the hospital and a Hilton Garden Inn in Indiana, we were all able to come back to Ohio to continue their road to recovery. Our mom was transferred to a skilled nursing facility to receive care, rehab, and time to heal her many broken bones. Our dad was transferred to a rehab hospital where he is learning to use a wheelchair and build up his strength.
As you can imagine the medical costs will be astronomical. And while we are grateful to be in Ohio, the reality of the financial impact of this tragic event is already taking a toll. Your donation will go towards uncovered medical bills, wheelchair accessible housing, and any additional unknown costs that may arise.
We are so grateful to everyone who has sent their love and prayers over the past few weeks. It has meant more than you will ever know. Your support through this fundraiser would help in ways we can’t even describe. We humbly ask that you share this link with others to help spread the story of our family.
Their injuries are very complex and the road to recovery will be long. While we are continuing to take it day-by-day, their small progress is nothing short of a miracle and we are so proud at how hard they are fighting for their lives.
From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!
