Dear friends and family, as you know dad has been diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer with an initial prognosis of months to a year.  However, upon being diagnosed dad opted to  have thoracic surgery with a specialized team with the hope that he could beat the odds given to him.

Our prayers have been answered in that dad was able to withstand this uncommon surgery despite having many complications.  With that said, due to the complexity of the surgery many of the skilled nursing facilities have denied him as a patient due to the staff not having the experience to care for him. In times of desperation we even have offered to pay cash but they have denied due to him being a potential liability due to the complexity of his medical needs.

Dad has four different drainage tubes coming out of his body and he receives his food and medication from a j-tube.

His medical team has told us that his procedure is not common and it requiere specialized care and typically that burden has fallen on the family. Moreover, the next step is radiation and chemo therapy, which is an outpatient procedure and not done inpatient.

Despite the challenges we are now in week 3 of radiation and chemo therapy.  He receives radiation twice a day and chemo once a day, five days a week.

Currently, we have used our resources to help cover medication, in-home nursing care, and travel back and forth to his medical visits.  We live 45-60 minutes from TGH cancer center and we travel there at least 2-3 times a day for a total of four hours of daily travel time.

At this point we have depleted personal resources, as well as the travel stipend and resources from the American Cancer Society.  We are on a waiting list for free lodging through the American Cancer Society,  but that’s not a guarantee. They do have lodging we could pay out of pocket. Lodging would be helpful so that dad doesn’t have to travel back and forth to cancer center in between the daily appointments and he could recover in a home-like environment instead of being on the road.

We have the following  expenses: insurance (new year deductible, copays, 20% co-insurance responsibility, prescription), 24-nursing care (starting at end of January), travel (rides to his appointments, treatments),  medical supplies (wound care, j-tube feeding formula), lodging close to the TGH cancer center so he could recover there in between sessions rather than traveling back and forth.  Dad  will also have reconstructive surgery after his radiation and chemo therapy which consists of re-attaching his esophagus to his stomach and gradually introducing foods.

Overall, our biggest dilemma is that although his insurance covers rides for example, they can only offer a pick up/drop off window no less than 2 hours from his actual appointment and unfortunately due to dad’s surgery and condition he cannot wait that long for a ride without risking other complications.  Although they offer nursing care, it is only once a week for 45-minutes despite him not being able to care for himself and needing 24-hour care.  I can list many of the complications but that’s not the focus.

Friends and family the journey is long but there is hope that dad could actually beat this cancer if treatment shrinks the cancer.  At that point his medical team would remove the cancer, and do reconstruction surgery.  It sounds like a lot, but dad is strong and willing to fight it.

Therefore, we ask for your help.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated.  No amount is too small as all would go to cover his care and treatment costs.  Thank you in advance for any help you could provide.

Our dad is a loving father who is facing this cancer with dignity but fiercely not giving up. He is a brave man, a hero to his children and grandchildren.  His neighbors love him as he has been a helping hand or a listening ear to them.  He has yet a lot of life and love to give.  He has two grand-babies that he is yearning to spend more time with and be there for them just as his older grandchildren. Please help us make it happen. #victorstrong donations will all go directly to my dad Victor Rosado.
