After an incredibly long 168 days of hospitalization, Josh is finally home for a bit. Thank you, Jesus. He is awaiting his next phase of treatment which will be rehabilitation and prosthetics at Walter Reed. In the meantime, he is catching up on all the Codie/Colt/Court snuggles, play, and conversations. I cannot imagine a better feeling.
Next steps include:
- determining what prosthetics will provide Josh the ability to resume his every day activities and hobbies. He is a quad amputee with each limb requiring slightly different prosthetics.
-His eventual travel and stay at Walter Reed. We aren’t certain of this timeline just yet.
-Modifying his home to adapt to his needs.
Josh is a living, breathing miracle and we are so thankful for the friends, family, and strangers who have rallied behind him.
UPDATE: March 29: After 50 days at UC Health Anschutz, Josh is on the move. On Monday, Josh will transfer to a long term acute care facility, where he will continue to recover and grow stronger for rehabilitation. He will come back to UC Health for the completion of his skin graph and down the road, hand amputations. After that, Josh will start his rehabilitation. We aren’t quite sure where that will take place yet. The journey to recovery is long and will require both endurance and patience.
After much consideration, Josh has decided to forgo the process of hand transplants. The risk/reward ratio is still too risky. Instead, Josh will rely on prosthetics. We have learned that there are several types of upper limb prosthetics, each used for different purposes. Most amputees will have a few prosthetics in their arsenal. This is good news in that Josh will be able to resume many of his hobbies and day to day activities. The bad news is that prosthetics are incredibly expensive. We have been quoted up to $150,000 per hand prosthetic.
Words fail to articulate the depth of our gratitude for the outpouring of generosity and support. We are so thankful that you all would rally behind Josh during this incredibly difficult time. As Josh approaches this next chapter in his recovery, his needs will continue to evolve. From adaptive devices to prosthetics - his list of necessary devices is seemingly endless. However, they are the very things that will allow Josh a life of normalcy and autonomy.
Your generous contributions will help provide these very things. From the bottom of our grateful hearts, thank you.
UPDATE: When we started this GoFundMe 5 days ago, I could have never imagined that we would hit our goal in five days. The incredible outpouring of donations from people who love Josh, and those who have been touched by his story, truly amazes us. This victory was made possible by your generosity. We are immensely grateful.
Every day brings progress, new information, and next-step decisions. Josh is a warrior of a man. He continues to defy the odds. His grit, determination, and fortitude are bar none. Between these character traits, the top-notch care he has received at UC Health Anschutz, the love he has felt from friends, family, caring strangers, and most importantly, God's miracle-working power, He is still with us and still fighting. Today's next-step decision is to figure out which long-term acute care facility to place him in. At this time, it appears insurance will not cover this. Together, you all have met the cost of a handicap-accessible van. With your support and generosity, we would like to tackle the cost of LTAC. With this said, I am increasing our goal to $150,000.
Tonight, Courtney shared the updated GoFundME information with Josh. She also shared that media outlets have been reaching out wanting to share Josh's story. Josh was moved to tears by the generosity of people wanting to support him during this time and truly humbled that people would want to tell his story.
I receive messages every day from people that have been touched by Josh in their life. Today, I want you to know that you have deeply touched him by your prayers, messages of support, and generous donations. Thank you will never be enough.
ORIGINAL POST: Please join us in supporting the Meyer family. On Feb. 9th, 2024 Josh Meyer was rushed to the ER after a very short bout of the flu. Boulder Regional quickly realized that Josh was very sick and in addition to the flu, he was suffering from streptococcus pneumonia and sepsis. They intubated him and transferred him to UC Health Anschutz on Feb. 10th. The sepsis ravaged his body causing multi-system organ failure and multiple limb loss.
Josh is a very determined, strong, and resilient individual. Against all odds (and after so many answered prayers), Josh is still with us and still fighting. After 35 days in the cardio-thoracic ICU, he was moved to critical care.
The road to recovery as a quad amputee is long and life will look very different for him and his family. With your support and generosity, we are hoping to raise enough money to help mitigate the cost of a wheelchair accessible vehicle and medical bills.
Josh is the most generous person I know. He is known for his big heart and positive spirit. Let’s rally behind him and his sweet young family, and show them our love and support during his time of need.
