Hidden Figures Movie Screening
Donation protected
DETAILED UPDATE: I don't know where to begin since there's so much I want to say! I'm hoping that I included all the necessary details below, but feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about this Hidden Figures event. Thank you, again, for making this event possible!
How was the donated money allocated? Below pie chart illustrates what happened to each dollar donated to the campaign. Fortunately, all of the participants had their own transportation to and from the venue so no money was allocated there.
In addition to the $5,925 in donations, I purchased eight orginal and eight Young Reader editions of Hidden Figures to raffle off after the movie ($175) and matched the $157.40 donation for 412 Food Rescue because of their monumental assistance with the logistics for this event. The costs were kept low due to SouthSide Works Cinemas providing discounted admission on both Monday and Tuesday movie screenings and Innovation Works providing printing services for the informative trifolds that were handed out.
Who went? The majority of attendees were students and chaperones identified by Pittsburgh Public Schools. In addition, members of the South Hills Interfaith Movement and Allegheny County Housing Authority attended.

What happened after the movie? Healthy lunches were distributed to each attendee. (I am so grateful that SouthSide Works Cinema allowed outside food to be distributed and consumed in their theater!) While they ate, 3-4 people from the tech community talked to them about the resources available to them to get started in STEAM, as well as their own experiences in tech.

Afterwards we raffled off Hidden Figures books, and each attendee could also grab some swag before leaving SouthSide Works (Google lab safety glasses provided by the Children's Museum, pens and pencils from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, stickers and information from 412 Food Rescue, and STEAM resources trifolds funded by Innovation Works).

What's amazing is that this event didn't end after everyone left the theater. The excess lunches on Monday and Tuesday that were unclaimed by the attendees were immediately delivered to Bethlehem Haven and the Smithfield United Church Shelter for their clients. In addition, the leftover swag -- the lab safety glasses -- were distributed to DumpBusters at Allegheny Cleanways and various schools in Allegheny County via WOM and the Education Partnership.
Hopefully you can see that your donation extended much further than a simple movie screening. Thank you so much for your support!

CAMPAIGN: Members of Girl Develop It are raising funds to send about 700 low-income children and chaperones to see the movie Hidden Figures on February 20, 2017 and February 21, 2017, at SouthSide Works Cinema in Pittsburgh. We would like to be able to cover their admission and concessions. The cost per attendee is $5 for a movie ticket and $2.75 for a 32 oz popcorn, 12 oz fountain drink, and fun-sized Skittles. In addition, we would like to cover their transportation. Any excess funds will be donated directly to Girls Who Code, whose mission statement is to close the gender gap in technology.
After the screening, we are planning to host a panel of professionals representing various tech groups in Pittsburgh. Attendees should be able to leave with inspiration from the movie and resources to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields.
We are working with Pittsburgh Public Schools and 412 Food Rescue to identify the people who would best take advantage of this opportunity.
It is fitting that this month is also Black History month. Donating to this event is a great way to share this inspirational, transformative story, which can light the fire of focus and interest in the sciences.
Your donation is transparent. This page will be updated with specifics on where each dollar went after February 21.
If you cannot donate financially and still want to contribute, please spread the word about this event! Feel free to contact us here if you have any recommendations on who should be on the tech panel or if you would like to volunteer your time for the event.
Thank you so much!

HIDDEN FIGURES is the untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) -- brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
