High School Scholarship Program
Springtime. My Birthday. Both are synonymous with my annual High School Scholarship fundraiser, this being the fifth year. Some recipients from year one are now in trade school or university, others will enter grade 11 in the fall.
"Education can prevent the transmission of poverty between generations. Education also has documented effect on health, nutrition, economic development and on environmental protection." (UNESCO 2014)
There is no secondary school in the rural, mountainous community in Basen Manyan, Haiti. Education ends at grade six for most children. This Scholarship Program enables some students from Basen to attend school in a nearby city where they stay with family or friends during the school year.
These students are chosen from among their peers based on their past academic achievement. Their progress is closely monitored with requirements to maintain above average grades, to participate in the life of the community and to serve as a role models and mentors to their peers and siblings.
The goal of this program is not only to educate young people but to raise up leaders who will have a positive impact on the continued development of the country of Haiti.
