Highland Canoe & Kayak Kiosk Eagle Project

My name is Taso Bakatsias and I am an Eagle Scout candidate from Highland's Troop 70 unit in New York. I have been working with our Town's Environmental Conservation Committee (ECC) to help fund and install a paddling kiosk at our Black Creek Canoe & Kayak launch site, just off 299 in the Town of Lloyd. The planning has included several community groups aside from ECC, which includes Scenic Hudson, The John Burroughs Black Creek Commission and the Town of Lloyd.

The Black Creek watershed begins in the Town of Lloyd and eventually empties into the Hudson River. The creek has offers paddlers a scenic "trail" where one can appreciate the wildlife and habitat the Black Creek provides. A kiosk at the launch site would help inform paddlers of the paddle way, areas best suited to turn around, and other landmarks that are useful for paddlers.

The kiosk is estimated at a cost of $3,500. Approximately $2,000 will fund the laminate map, dual-sided in English and Spanish. The kiosk itself is made of Cedar, corrugated metal for roofing and steel hardware holding the form together.
